Upgrading W510 beyond 16Gb

2013-02-09, 13:24 PM

I have a ThinkPad W510 laptop from Feb 2011 which I am very happy with.

It is a 4318 model with an Intel i7-Q720 4 core processor.

I currently have 16Gb of memory in the laptop.

My question is can I upgrade the memory to 24Gb or 32Gb

The official lenovo spec is max 16Gb and indeed the intel spec for Q720 is 8Gb x 2 memory channels (16Gb).

I have, however, seen a posting on this site suggesting that actually you can get the w510 to upgrade beyond this.

If I undo the memory panel on the back of the machine there are 2 x 4gb samsung 204 pin SODIMM so I assume that there are two more in a more inaccessible location.

I was rather hoping to replace these with two 8Gb dimms and have 24Gb but some slight reassurance that this might work would be appreciated.

Yes, the W510, W520 and W530 all support 8GB SoDIMMs.  The quad core versions of these portable workstations have four usable slots so you can take the RAM up to 32GB.

Re: Upgrading W510 beyond 16Gb

I have now fitted 2 x 8Gb DIMMs to my W510 (see original post for full details) in the accessible DIMM slots.

24Gb reported by Windows 7 and working well enough to type this.

CMS016GX3M2A1333c9 is the part number of the Corsair RAM used.

Can anyone comment on how easy it is to access the other 2 DIMM slots so I can go to 32Gb.

Thanks for the tip on the other dimm locations.  Following the lenovo service guide this was easy to upgrade.  Now running 32Gb on the W510, any very nice too.

Re: Upgrading W510 beyond 16Gb

I am upgrading my W-510 4319-2PU to 32 gigabytes using 4x 8gb GSkill DDR3-1333 SODIMMS. I am going to also upgrade the processor to a i7-920XM. I will reply only if I am not successful. Also considering upgrading processor to a 2-4gen i7 g2 socket chip. Anyone tried a later generation I7 CPU? They all have the same socket and wattage.

Update: Memory upgrade was a complete success.
