W500 + SSD upgrade: SATA II compatible??

2011-05-30, 19:25 PM

Hi all,

it's time for me to upgrade the drive in my W500 - originally purchased with the (v. expensive) 120Gb SSD option, now benchmarking poorly against newer drives.  My thoughts on options are:

1. replace with fastest drive allowable (maybe Vertex 2 SATA II??) and use the old SSD in Ultrabay adaptor (preferred option)

2. Buy something like an Intel 510 120Gb  SATA III as my primary (OS) drive, booting from the Ultrabay III, leaving the current drive where it is (for data)

I'm guessing that option 2 will provide the greatest speed benefits (I do a lot of drive-intensive work) with the downside of losing my DVD drive/burner (but adding value with fast RAM paging).

However, if I can use a SATA II at full speed in the standard drive bay, then perhaps that will add sufficient benefit without compromising on the DVD side of things.  In this case, I'm hoping the W500 will support SATA II - hoping that my W500 doesn't limit drive throughput (as I've read elsewhere).

Your comments greatly appreciated!

Many regards,

David (Sydney, Australia)

the W500, T400, T500, R400, R500 all support SATA II in the main drive bay and the ultrabay.

Many thanks for your responses.  In the meantime I have purchased Vertex 2 Sata II drive and the installation has gone perfectly.  This new drive is giving me a far better experience - first noticed in the speed of installing my software: Office, VS2010, SQL 2008R2 etc.  Blindingly fast!

As for alignment - the previous installation was checked and was aligned.  In fact I have read that Win 7 will automatically align when installed to an SSD.

My hope is that this newer version of SSD with the Sandforce controller will not degrade as the original one did.  The difference in performance from new to 18 months of use was quite significant!

Cheers and thanks again,

David E (Sydney)

Align?
What's that all about? Some Big/Little Endian nonsense or...?

SSDs slow down over time? Why? The more I see posted about SSDs, the less of a solution it sounds like.
