In general, we are recommending customers who have lost activation to follow the steps in this tip, and if the OEM key on the bottom of the system will not re-activate Windows, to contact Microsoft and obtain a new key.
You will then need to retain that new key, and re-enter it if you reload Windows 7 on your system.
Update - version 1.15 now available - this is an equivalent / replacement for 1.12 and delivers all the updates that 1.12 provided, but is not a fix for activation symptoms.

Let's see if I understand this... if I went through the reactivation procedure via MS when I flashed the defective BIOS, what will happen when I flash the next version of the BIOS. Will I have to do the reactivation a second time? If so, is MS aware that this is 100% a Lenovo mistake, and that nobody is trying to snag a free copy of the OS? Or do we have to go through the interrogation / declaration that this is a licensed machine, etc., etc., etc. all over again?
The first episode lost me about 3 hours of time, so I'd kind of like to know what to expect. Unfortunately, at this point I am outside the returen-for-refund period or I would have made how I really feel very clear to Lenovo.

As of today, Sunday, 04.04 v1.15-1.09 is STILL on the Lenovo / IBM website - http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/MIGR-74582.html
Stupidly, I "upgraded" my machine (4319-29G) to the abovementioned BIOS release - result the machine is dead.
Knowing that lenovo are world-renowed for their customer service and QA, I wonder what their response might be????

Just to clarify, when you say "the machine is dead", do you mean it is working but requesting activation, or is it dead in some other way?
Did you upgrade to BIOS 1.12. before going to 1.15?

My W510 is dead as well from the new BIOS update. Between this and the noisy processor, I'm beginning to regret purchasing my first Lenovo. I've never had a BIOS update brick a machine before. The ThinkLight comes on for a seoncd and the LED's flash like a normal "turn on", but the screen just stays black and nothing happnes. Since I'm in my 30 days, I'm just going to send it back and get a different brand.

I'd like Mark or someone from Lenovo to explain this, which appears in the description to the 1.15 BIOS for the W510:
BIOS: 1.15 / ECP: 1.09
I am one of those who flashed the 1.12 BIOS from the file, not from a CD, and lost my authentication table.
I have read this explanation of the new BIOS several times and am not sure what it means. There are several possible interpretations.
It might mean that if you were a victim of Lenovo's untested and destruction BIOS, you will have to reactivate again if the new 1.15 is installed.
It might mean that you can't flash 1.15 if you flashed 1.12.
Of course, the "This problem does not affect when BIOS updating by BIOS Update" makes no sense at all.
In summation: I had to reactivate Win 7 Ultimate ona W510 4318 CTO. If I flash the 1.15 BIOS, either by running the file or burning the iso, will my situation improve, stay the same or fry my machine?
I find it, also, rather disingenious of Lenovo to have flagged this thread as "resolved." For those of us who had our authentication table destroyed, this issue is not resolved and the "notice" that says "it's not resolved if you flashed it" adds insult to injury.

The 1.15 BIOS showed up if I did not do autodetect and just entred Thinkpad > W510 > 4318 > CTO > Win 7.
Autodetect usually sends me to an IBM error and support page, or, on the rare occasions it autodetects, it misidentifies the machine and / or the OS installed. Kuhl.
