W510 USB Gone AWOL

[ Edited ]

as anyone else had problems with the USB port at the rear of the W510?

It was working fine for the first few weeks of owning it but I noticed recently that anything I plugin is powered ok but there doesn't appear to be any data connection. My mouse, blackberry, ext hdd and ipod all no longer work.

I've looked in the Device Manager and sure enough there's a 'Unknown Device' under the USB Controllers which I think is this USB port. I've tried uninstalling the driver and reinstalling it with no success.

The error associated with it is:

Windows has stopped this device because it has reported problems. (Code 43)

The Microsoft site explains that this code means:

One of the drivers controlling the device notified the operating system that the device failed in some manner.

Does anyone have any ideas how to resolve it? Could it be a hardward problem?

Regards

Andy Wu

An update for the BIOS was released yesterday for the W510. But I don't see anything in the release notes regarding USB.

[Edit: removed reference to USB 3.0 driver release, which was for Feb 9th, not Mar 9th.]

Re: rear usb no longer working

I'm glad to hear I'm not the only one having the problem.

Jimbo, I don't see any update for the USB 3.0 Driver. The current release is still showing 1.0.18.0 released in Feb.

Re: rear usb no longer working

My apologies, Andy, you're right. The BIOS update was released yesterday. But I misread the month on the USB 3.0 driver release, as it was Feb 9th, not Mar 9th. So your USB 3.0 port has the right personality after all. sorry

Re: rear usb no longer working

Have the same problem - temporary fix for me was to remove the battery and re-install - USB came back - has gone out twice

Re: rear usb no longer working

It has come back to life for me but not through anything I remember doing. I haven't reinstalled anything so not sure what the logic is in why it returned. Hope it stays that way!
