W510 with hdd caddy 0A65623

2012-08-14, 13:24 PM

Hello,

I have a Lenovo w150 and I am looking for a hdd caddy to insert my hdd into the optical drive slot. (In order to replace the standard hdd with an ssd).

So I seached the internet and found a few posts on the original 43N3412 caddy. People say that it does not fit correclty into the notebook, leaving a 3mm wide slot. So I kept on searching and found the new 0A65623 caddy, which is officially dedicated to the w520 upwards.

My question is whether the 0A65623 fits into the w510 case?

Thanks a lot for your help,

bright1

Hello bright1,

Here is a link to a bay adapter available by Lenovo:

http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/product-and-parts/detail.page?&LegacyDocID=MIGR-73170

As you can see this is the adaptor you would need to place a hard drive in the optical bay of the computer.

There are several different hard drives listed at the bottom of the page on the link that are compatible with the adapter.

This will be your best choice so there is no "wiggle room" for your hard drive.

Unfortunately the caddy you found for the W520 and up is not compatible with your W510.  This is due to the bay dimensions.  Your w510 has room for a 9.5mm drive when the w520 has a 12.5mm drive.

The optical drive is an ultrabay drive, this is just its design.  This is why you would need an ultrabay adapter rather than just a caddy.

I hope this helps,

Alex

Thank you for your advice, Alex!

I already found this adapter, but on the net people often state there is "wiggle room". But I will go with your advice and try it. In the worst case I can return it ;)

So thanks a lot,

bright

That's no problem at all.  The Ultrabay shouldn't have any "wiggle room".  I have many Lenovo Laptops where I work and many have ultrabay drives and none have any "wiggle room".  But to let you know, they all work fine with me.  I haven't had any problems with them yet.

So, I do recommend these.

Glad I could help,

Alex

I have a W510 and use the Ultrabay with a second hard drive. The complaint that some people have is a small gap that can exist between the top of the Ultrabay and the bay housing. However I don't find this to be any issue myself, and there is no wiggle. FYI

The "gap" folks refer to is approximately 3mm and occurs when the 9.5mm adapter is in the Ultrabay slot that can hold either the 9.5mm adapter or the 12.7mm adapter. To avoid the "wiggle" a user would stick with the 12.7mm adapter and never have that problem. As the W510 only can fit the 9.5mm adapter, you will not encounter that problem at all.

Hopefully that clears things up a bit more.

Best regards,

Ed
