W520 1000m at 3440 x 1080?

I see that my W520 with Nvidia 1000m supports 2560 x 1600. But will it support 3440 x 1080?

You might think so, because 3440 x 1080 = 3715200, where 2560 x 1600 = 4096000.

There are a lot of new and interesting monitors coming out, hence the question. For example:

I am only interested in driving the monitor from a single Displayport.

Re: W520 1000m at 3440 x 1080?

Even older models should support 4k, albeit at 30fps - limited by DP/DVI on these machines. The 540 series will likely support also 60fps, though i haven't tested.

Net: (m)DP/HDMI ports are in flux, and most GPUs won't play nice with monitors over 2560x1600 as of Q2'14; it's a bit of wild west transition now. I'd wait until mid'15 for all the GPU (particularly the Optimus pair Intel/Nvidia!) and port wrinkles to be ironed out.

BTW, i'd also expect the 4k 15" panels to become standard fare on the $1500+ machines. Toshiba already has it, Dell/HP will follow. Lenovo may drag, since their focus is no longer W/T, but the sexier tablet hybrids.

Re: W520 1000m at 3440 x 1080?

the W520 can support 3840x1080 when you are using the DP port.

I have the W520 running 2 x 1920 x 1080 using a ThinkPad displayport splitter.

Hi - have my 4K monitor running on my w520 laptop using these settings (I created a custom resolution in the nVidia control panel) - and running out of the DP port:

Wow! That is great news Michel! I'll give it a try. Thank you.

Quick question: I realize you may not know but... Does running the 4K monitor preclude running a second monitor from the mini-dock?

I don't know - I don't own a dock to test...

I'm amazed this w520 I purchased 3 years ago is able to power a 4K monitor as it is.
