W520 + Crucial M4 256GB Fine for 10 months now 2100:Detection Error on HDD0

Hi,

I've had my W520 since November or so last year, I swapped out the hard disk when I got it for a Crucial M4 256GB.  The machine has been fast and totally stable until now.  I'm using Win7 Pro and have not applied reg hacks or bois updates, it just worked.

Now I am seeing the 2100: Detection Error on HDD0 sporadically after being unattended for about 30 mins.  Rebooting solves the problem.  The machine is set to never sleep or hibernate other than manually.  It hasnt yet occured when working at the machine but I suspect Windows is crashing, then this message appears as the machine tries to reboot.  When I reboot manually its detected and Win7 runs.

Has anyone seen this or have any ideas?

  • Could it be an overheating issue?
  • Is my drive on the way out? It has been running far more than is strictly nessesary.
  • The machine is set to never hibernate/sleep, so it cant be an error related to that.

SSD Life reports the drive is in excellent health.  All files are stored on network shares, only program files on the SSD.

Regards

Matt

Try putting the old drive in and see if it does the same.

Do note that SSDs tend to fail in unconventional manners compared to platter drives.

Re: W520 + Crucial M4 256GB Fine for 10 months now 2100:Detection Error on HDD0

After wondering about how much I've been using the drive, I googled "Crucial M4 5000 hours" as I have 5200 power on hours.

Seems there is an issue with drives that have been powered on for that long.

Obviously not an Lenovo Issue but I suspect alot of W users are using this drive.

I will find and apply the firmware update then report back!

Regards

Matt

No idea what the firmware level was, but it was eligable for an update to 00F which has just been applied.

I'm fairly certain that will solve my issue but will report in the morning whether the machine is still running.
