W520 Memory Upgrade Not Working

2016-08-10, 19:30 PM

I just purchased two "Crucial 8GB Kit (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1866 SODIMM" wanting to upgrade my W520 to 16GB of RAM. I installed all memory cards into all four slots and the laptop will not boot. When I remove two memory cards and only leave one in Slot 0 on the bottom and Slot 0 underneath the keyboard, the system boots and recognizes my 8GB of memory. Any guidance on how I can get my system to recognize all four memory cards (16GB) would be great. Thanks.

Hello evenerscott, welcome to the community,

the W520 system was manufactured with both dual and quad core CPUs. In the dual core systems only two memory slots were supported with the others being sometimes populated by dummy modules.  Assuming you are referring to the system specs in your signature, the i7-2640M CPU listed is a dual core CPU and therfore, sorry to say, you would need 2x 8GB modules to replace your current 2x 4GB modules in order to achieve 16GB.

I was unable to find any 8GB recommended memory using the Crucial memory advisor however it would appear Kingston offer them.

I didn't realize my CPU was a dual core; all this time I thought that it was not. I was able to find a Crucial 2x 8GB modules so I'll give that a try. Thanks for your guidance.
