Symptoms

In Microsoft Windows 7, Clone Mode (same image on both the ThinkPad LCD and an external monitor) may not function when using the Fn + F7 key combination on ThinkPads that have Optimus graphics. Depending upon what combination of display devices are being used, Optimus may use two different video adapters: integrated Intel graphics and discrete NVIDIA graphics. Because two different graphics adapters may be in use, Windows 7 may not be able to correctly set up Clone Mode.

Diagnosis

Clone Mode in Optimus using two graphics adapters is only supported and configured through the NVIDIA Control Panel.  It can not be enabled by using the Windows display control (Fn + F7) or the Intel display control panel.

The following shows what display ports are controlled by the different display adapters.  If the display configuration you are using involves both the Intel and NVIDIA graphics adapters, Fn + F7 will not work correctly.

ThinkPad T420, T420i, T420s, T420si, T520, T520i

  • NVIDIA NVS 4200M
    • Computer's DisplayPort connector
    • Docking Station's DVI connector(s) or DisplayPort connector(s)
  • Intel HD Graphics Family
    • (Computer's LCD)
    • Computer's analog VGA connector
    • Docking Station's analog VGA connector

ThinkPad W520

  • NVIDIA Quadro 1000M or NVIDIA Quadro 2000M
    • Computer's analog VGA connector
    • Docking Station's analog VGA connector
    • Computer's DisplayPort connector
    • Docking Station's DVI connector(s) or DisplayPort connector(s)
  • Intel HD Graphics Family
    • (Computer's LCD)

Solution

NB : Please see releated tip on Lenovo's Support Site for additional details.

Here are the steps to duplicating the laptop screen to an external display.

1 - Log into Windows so your desktop is visible
2 - Connect the projector or external monitor

3 - Your screen will flash several times

4 - Open the NVIDIA control panel. You can do this from the Windows control panel or by right-clicking on your desktop

5 - Find the Display/Set up multiple displays option in the menu on the left

6 - Make sure that your laptop screen and your external display are both selected in the "Select the display you want to use" area

Example:

W520 Seperate

7 - In the "Drag Icons" area, right-click on your laptop display and choose "Duplicate Displays use X as source" where X is the indentifier for your laptop.

Example:

W520 Duplicated

 IMPORTANT NOTES:

Make sure that you DO NOT use the Shift-F7 hotkey or other Windows feature to duplicate the displays. The duplication can ONLY be done from the NVIDIA Control Panel.

If you are having trouble identifying which screen is which in the NVIDIA control panel, use the menu option DIsplays -> Identify Displays.

Hello, could anybody help? Want to connect VIVE HTC to my ThinkPad 550S but the VIVE fails to run. When running compatibility test - Steam VR Performance test - CPU and OS are OK but GPU fails as it is only running on INTEL HD Graphics 5500 and not on the built in Quadro K620M. Thanks.
