W520 caddy 7200rpm drive

2016-04-17, 0:16 AM

First time poster here.

Finally took the plunge and decided to upgrade my hard drive to an ssd (samsung evo 850 500gb),

got a great deal and jumped on it. I dont see me having any problems putting the drive in but incase theres something im unaware of let me know.

But my question is, i also wanted to expand my storage even more so i bought the W520 hard drive caddy to swap out for my optical drive (I never use it), and as an impulse buy bought a refurbished HGST Travelstar 7K1000 2.5-Inch 1TB 7200 RPM drive [HTS721010A9E630 (0J22423)] to go in the caddy (to total 1.5TB storage).

It will physically fit and run in the caddy but should i be worried about overheating or powerdraw issues? Dont want to fry my laptop or anything. And if it is going to be a problem is there something i could do to make sure nothing bad happens (ie: laptop cooling pad)?

Thanks in advnace!

Several things to try:

1

Did you check if the 1T drive boots when you put it some other machine or in place of the SSD drive you use to boot?

2

Where did you get the caddy? What type it is? Did you dry another drive in it?

3

You can remove the SSD drive and put it into the caddy and see if the machine boots.

If it is an aftermarket ultrabay adapter, one possible reason was a small change in the adapters between T400/T500 and T410/T510. The newer machines will not work with the older adapters.
