W520 heatsink installation question

2018-11-03, 18:37 PM

Hello community,

For my Lenove ThinkPad W520 I’ve bought and received brand new heatsink FRU04W1576 with grey compound already applyed like in the picture www.laptopexpress.co.uk/shop/upload/image/cache/data/IBM/Fan/04W1576-500x500.jpg

My question is:

Should I remove it before applying Arctic MX-4 on both heatsink and CPU/GPU surfaces or to leave grey compound on heasink and to apply Arctic only on CPU and GPU?

Thank you for answers!

Welcome to the forum!

My personal recommendation would be to remove the thermal compound from the heatsink, in my experience the supplied paste is not of good quality. While the Artic MX-4 has an excellent reputation.

Then clean up the heatsink surfaces with 100% alcohol , do the same on the CPU and GPU, then apply a very thin layer of your MX-4 over the CPU and GPU dye and when installing the heatsink make sure it's making full flat contact with the motherboard. Keep the screws tight.

More then the quality of the paste, on a W520 assembly it is fair to assume the age has deteriorated the once "bad quality paste" to "insulating goo". Hence a repaste is essential. This was my experience after ordering a T430 FAN assembly earlier this year.

He said it was a new Lenovo heatsink.  Use the thermal compound that came pre-installed.

Rich, it is a fair comment, however he wrote "brand new assembly for.." without specifying the source, moreover there are many unknown variables that would contribute to the current heat compound condition, and since we talk about a 10 year old component it would be against common sense not to re-paste the heat sink while you have a chance. IMHO..

To clarify to the original poster, you either use a new thermal compund or use the one supplied. You are not meant to add addtional compound.

Adding to my own experience of replacing a T430 assembly, the supplied paste had dried out and was unusable.

Thank you !

I decided that my poor skills would not allow me to apply the Arctic in proper way. I just scare of bubbles and uneven layer.

So I decided to use pre-applied compound and to monitor temperatures closely. If/when I'll see overheating, I'll remove the sink and I'll follow YOUR advice.

I'm not a gamer, so I hope that CPU will burn out right away.

So far the fligt is normal see att. :)

You're welcome. Is not that the paste that comes with the heatsink is useless, but the MX-4 is much better. So I guess if you don't push the CPU too much you will be ok for few years... :smileywink:
