W520 horribly loud noise

2014-01-04, 17:04 PM

This really scared me.

This happened twice so far, my W520 had some horrible loud noice on waking up from hibernation - as if a big motor was running inside it, I have it on the desk and the desk sounds like something's beating it.  I could hear the noice from across the room.  At the moment I thought the laptop could explode any second.  And it would last for about 10-15 seconds

This is not just everyday fan / CPU noices (I hear that all the time), it's much louder, and now I'm concerned something's wrong with the laptop.

Does anybody know what could have caused it?

Besides the fan. the only motor in the machine is in the disk drive. Some disks are louder than others, and if you have a lot of memory, there will be a lot of disk reads. Maybe your disk needs defragmenting.

Thanks richk.  it's done and will see if it solves the problem.

just that I've never heard it from any computer, no matter how old and beaten it is.  I wonder if there's something physically wrong with the hardware.

It is hard to tell from a distance, but I suggest getting a copy of windft (free) and test your drive.

Thanks again richk. Tried that, it couldn't detect any drives, then I realized "WinDFT is not designed to run on your primary operating drive". Is there any other tests I could run?
