W520 not able to play 1080P videos

I have been a dell customer for last 12 years or so.  Last month I thought I would give ThinkPad a try.

Bought a W520 laptop with some decent config . There are some issues like windows desktop manager crashed, got bluescreen of death. SO I installed all the updates. Few days ago I tried to play a 1080p planet earth video . The video plays for a minute or so then stops. Called technical support they created many tickets but of no use. The last thing they told me was to run a diag tool and that tested memory and hard drive.

Does anyone know whats going on?

Looks like the optimus is not switching drivers. So I went to Bios then selected all three options and tried but the same results.

Kind of upset with lenovo.

Re: W520 not able to play 1080P videos

By "just stop", does it freeze, exit the program, give an error message? Does just the video stop or does the entire computer freeze? Have you tried a different 1080 video? Have you tried a lower resolution video?

I've had tons of problems with Optimus not switching between GPU's correctly, but that shouldn't affect video playback.

Re: W520 not able to play 1080P videos

Make sure Flash player is playing on the integrated card, not the discrete. Make sure you're on the latest Flash Player stable release.

And just to rule out the obvious, the video is buffering sufficiently, yes?

Thanks for the reply ,

Yes its buffering

Also  how do I verify that flash player is using nvidia.

When I play it on IE , it stops and show the following message "This Video is currently unavailable"

Re: W520 not able to play 1080P videos

Run this tool while Flash is running:
http://forums.laptopvideo2go.com/topic/26992-optimus-test-tools-finally-in-users-hands/

You can set the graphics card affinity using NVIDIA Control Panel. The desired process should be the browser .EXE, or in the case of Firefox, plugin-container.exe.

Again, you want it to run on the Intel card, not the NVIDIA.

Thank you so mucn for your direction. Now the flash is being played on nvidia.I still have the video issue. There is something wrong with the network buffering when it uses nvidia. The workstation simply cant buffer the video. It works fine on my wife toshiba and myold dell. I do have verizon FIOS and no issues on my other devices.

Re: W520 not able to play 1080P videos

Looks like one of the Lenovo System Update is causing this issue.I did re-install os using recovery cds and did all updates except "Lenovo System upddate". The 1080 P video works great. When i did all Lenovo update got a blue screen BSOD and also 1080p issues
