Question

Has anyone tried the ThinkPad Series 3 docking station with USB 3.0 dock with the W520?

The specs state that the W520 will have access to the USB 3.0 port on the dock. Does it?

Also, it was mentioned:

"Mini Dock Plus (90W & 170W): 1x VGA, 2x DVI, 2x DP

Many systems allow for two of these video ports to be used simultaneously. Select systems, including those with NVIDIA Optimus technology, allow for up to three video ports on the dock to be used simultaneously."

Does this mean the W520 can drive three monitors from this dock?

Answer

The USB 3.0 port replaces the eSata port on the previous docking station and can be accessed when the W520 is docked through the docking station port (there is one USB 3.0 port).

Note that the USB 3.0 port can be extended to a hub for additional connections at an aggregated 5gbs rate. The USB 2.0 eSATAp on the notebook is a powered connection. However, the eSATA port on the docking station is not powered.

The number of monitors that can be driven by the W520 does not change with the new dock. That limitation is in the particular usage of the NVIDIA chipset on the W520. The W530 can drive four monitors.
