W520 sleep behavior changed after installing Intel Management Engine Update

[ Edited ]

I was working away the other day and I received a Lenovo critical pop up which I recall was for the Intel update and I clicked the update button.

I have a Lenovo W520 and now whenever I put the computer to sleep, it looks like it went to sleep however the sleep light only goes on for a second and then goes off, where the light should stay lit until I want to use the computer again.  Now the computer will only start back up if I press the power button and it asks if I want to start the computer normally etc. as it looks like the system now crashes on sleep.

I checked the power options and all looks ok and I don't see new messages in the event viewer except for "The previous system shutdown at 9:37:45 PM on ‎06/‎07/‎2017 was unexpected." and "The system has rebooted without cleanly shutting down first. This error could be caused if the system stopped responding, crashed, or lost power unexpectedly."

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Re: W520 sleep behavior changed after installing Intel Management Engine Update

Problem solved.

After Intel Management Engine Firmware was updated, sleep didn't work on my Lenovo W520 running Windows 7.  Windows is up to date as well as my other software before this critical update popped up.

  • Critical update was: Intel Management Engine Firemware 7.1 - 7/8   7.1.91.3272
  • There was an optional Lenovo bios update that resolved this issue for me: ThinkPad BIOS update US   1.43.1.36

Re: W520 sleep behavior changed after installing Intel Management Engine Update

I have the same sleep behavior problem with my W520.  However, the ThinkPad BIOS Update 1.43.1.36 was installed on 6/9/2017.  The Intel Management Engine Firmware 7.1.91.3272 Update was installed a month later on 7/6/2017, and I have had the same sleep issue described above ever since.  I installed 5 other updates moments ago trying to resolve the sleep issue.  No luck here.  Is there a way for me to uninstall all the updates mentioned?  If not, what do you recommend I do?

Re: W520 sleep behavior changed after installing Intel Management Engine Update

[ Edited ]

I marked this closed as my W520 worked fine yesterday however today I had the same issue.  I was playing with a backlevel "Intel Management Engine Firmware 7.1" yesterday however at the end of the day I put the latest version back on BUT sleep and restart worked fine however a shutdown (overnight) didn't.

This is what I did today and sleep is working once again (I also did a shutdown, not just a restart to make sure).

  • Do a google search for 83rf42ww and download it to your W520 and then run it.
  • Then go to C:\DRIVERS\WIN\ME and run the program called MEUPDATE which will back level "Intel Management Engine Firmware 7.1" (Running this program will ask you if you want to do a backlevel).

Let us know if this solves your issue too, so others with W520 can find a solution.

"Lenovo - Update and Drivers" will still shows the currect version is installed, so we will just have to remember that it isn't.  Since the W520 is several years old now, I am not planning to do any more updates on it.

Re: W520 sleep behavior changed after installing Intel Management Engine Update

This solved the problem for me, too. THANKS!  A couple of helpful points...

"83rf42ww.exe" installs Intel Management Engine Firmware 7.1.52.1176, which is down-level from the version 7.1.91.3272 which causes problems with the sleep function. It's available at http://driverdl.lenovo.com.cn/think/download/driver/4908/AMT-Firmware[83rf42ww].exe .  The download places install files in the folder C:\DRIVERS\WIN\ME. You have to run the install program ("83rf42ww.exe") with Administrator privileges.

To run MEUPDATE, I had to open a Command Prompt window with Administrator privileges, then change directories to the folder with the downlevel update program {"C:\DRIVERS\WIN\ME"), then run the MEUPDATE script ("MEUPDATE").

Thanks again for finding this fix, Graham-D.
