W530 Drive Bay Adapter and Drive Caddy

2012-08-24, 12:41 PM

I purchased a W530 and immediatly swapped out the included hard drive for an SSD. I also purchased the drive bay adapter and planned on moving that original drive to it, but it did not come with a drive caddy. If the drive bay does not come with an extra one, and hard drives do not come with them.... why was it not included? Where do I purchase one? Does it need those rubber sides that are now around the SSD?

Hey Chuntley,

If you search around the forums you will find a lot of post on this or close to this subject about installing a second drive to W530.

Here is a link to one such post.

They mention the drive bay adapter, but not the actual caddy (or carriage, or whatever to call it) for the hard drive.

Hey Chuntley,

The ultra bay adapter is lenovo's drive caddy and is used to add a second HDD now if you want to use another form of Drive caddy you would need to purchase this through a third party vendor. If you Google you can look for one that would work with your HDD model and fit into the size of your laptop.

Best Regards,

Hiro

I do not think I'm using the correct terminology.

What I am looking for is the metal piece that sits underneath the hard drive and has 4 screws that goes into the hard drive. The instructions for the ultrabay converter shows that it is required, however I have not been able to find this piece anywhere (my new hard drive did not come with one). I've gone to several stores, have been searching online but to no avail. But again, I think it is because I have no idea what this piece is called.

You are looking for the drive tray, screws, and rubber rails. Here's the kit that I  purchased for my W520. It also fits the W530.

Doesn't this kit have a lenovo part number?
I'm in Denmark, so it's gonna be tedious to order from a US site. I just need to get some kind of part number so that I can find it from my local hardware pusher.

My standard 2,5" drive keeps sliding out of the ultrabay adapter because it's not fitted with the tray and rubber rails, I need to get it fixated with this kit in order not to constantly have to pull it out and put the drive back in place and gently push it back in (until next time it's been on the move)

You wrote: My standard 2,5" drive keeps sliding out of the ultrabay adapter because it's not fitted with the tray and rubber rails.

How can this happen? The UltraBay HDD/SSD caddy adapter is like a tray that has SATA connector at one end, black plastic bezel at the other end, and a hollow middle where you place a 2.5" drive and secure it with tiny screws. You push the whole thing into the UltraBay until the secure lock goes "click" and the bezel face aligns with the right size of the chassis.

You don't push the 2.5" drive directly into the UltraBay hole. And you do not need the metal caddy + rubber rails that are used in the main bay. To repeat: You need an UltraBay HDD/SSD caddy adapter.

Re: W530 Drive Bay Adapter and Drive Caddy

I have the same problem, if I move my W530, the second drive gets unseated and isn't recognized when I boot the system.  Shutting down the system, removing the bay, reseating the drive and restarting resolves the issue.

I wonder if Lenovo will do anything to help us with this?

Thanks,

G
