Re: W530 Power Adapters, 90W vs 135W Vs 170W

1. If you wanted small power supply then buy a X1 or a Mac.

2. If you need computing power stop crying about the size od the power supply.

I haven't seen for example any Dell Alienware computers to be light and small because hey, surprise it's made to be powerful, reliable and heavy.

Clearly as some said, the peak power needed for this computer in some cases is 150W. So with a little bit of safe margin which is 20W, we get 170W. Smart engineers decided that this power supply is the least what this computer needs. Why change that. When it annoys you, look at point 1.

It is still smaller than things HP is selling.

PS I am waiting for topics with titles like: "My W530 burned, Lenovo doesn't accept my warranty".

Re: W530 Power Adapters, 90W vs 135W Vs 170W

unfortunately,

"PS I am waiting for topics with titles like: "My W530 burned, Lenovo doesn't accept my warranty"."

Isnt going to happen. the closest thing you will get is "my cheap non-lenovo power brick burned and i bought another one and everything works again"

peak power usage at ~ 150W is very unrealistic and only happens under extreme situations. it is impossible for someone who doesnt know how to draw 100% tdp to achieve that. to achieve that you need to run OCCT Psu test or Bitcoin/Litecoin mining apps. even benchmarks or games like 3dmark never achieve 100% tdp and in those situations i'd be surprised to see over 70W Draw. (55W Max tdp K2000m and 45W Max tdp i7 3720QM - incl HD4000 gpu)

Re: W530 Power Adapters, 90W vs 135W Vs 170W

I use mine to perform Mechanical and CFD Simulations, 70-90% tdp with occasional peaks, when the simulation is running for 20-30h straight, is easy to achieve.

Re: W530 Power Adapters, 90W vs 135W Vs 170W

I can confirm, using 90W adapter with central pin short circut to the outer (-) of the connector is better idea, than using 1,5kohm resistor. Short circut is easier to do and power supply is recognized as 135W which is saver choice. With 1,5 kohm resistor i had problems with screen flickering and sometimes laptop hang. Now It seams stable.

Re: W530 Power Adapters, 90W vs 135W Vs 170W

Does anyone know where I could order a replacement DC power jack for the W530 (the 20V slotted jack for the Laptop end) as I'm trying to make an adapter to convert my 170W tip to a 90W smooth type.   I already have the smooth 90W tip, but I don't want to cut up the 170W p/s if I can help it, hence the DC power jack requirement.

something like the one in this link but with the slotted sections:

if anyone knows the part number that may help out too.

Thanks

Matt

Re: W530 Power Adapters, 90W vs 135W Vs 170W

Hello,

does anybody know if the same "adapter cable mod" would work with Lenovo 90W Ultraslim AC/DC Combo Adapter too? Or is there any other solution for travel (Air/Car) adapter for W530 - inverter excluded? TY

If plug looks the same it will work. Trick with pin grounding makes your w530 believe proper adapter is suplied. Current is current as long as your laptop is getting enough power everything will be fine.

Thank you for reply. Lenovo combo adapter actually has changable power tips ("20V power tip"). I think plug should be same yes...

Re: W530 Power Adapters, 90W vs 135W Vs 170W

Hi,

How do I make this connector or purchase from someone/you?

This Lenovo business of making incompatible power "bricks" is competely rediculous...

Thanks.
