I have had the W530 for several months now and it randomly powers off. This can occur when connected to the AC Adaptor, when running on battery, or when using the AC Adaptor without battery. Lenovo first replaced a fan, but that didn't solve. Now they are attempting to replace the system board. Anyone else seen this problem? I'm courious if the power settings may have had any impact.

There is a huge thread on the W520 with the abrupt power off issue. It doesn't seem to be reported all that often on the W530 (thankfully).
Static discharge has long been one of the suspected root causes.

Yes I have this problem too. It has only happened about four times in the last couple of months (since new) All have been when running on the battery only. I wondered if it was a battery connection problem because it would suddenly die, as if it had lost power. It does seem unlikely though as it has only happened when sitting on a desk, not moved around on a lap etc.
The issue is exactly the same as described here.

Interesting read regarding on the W520 thread. I have found that the problem exist with Window 7 Factory, Windows 7 Clean, and Windows 8 Clean install, so I'm fairly certain it's hardware. The recovery method (I can't just power it back on) is to disconnect the AC Adaptor, remove the battery, then reconnect both. If the battery charge led blinks, then I can power up and resume work, if not I just repeat until the led does blink.
Lenovo is replacing the system board, or at least trying to. They have had it for over 30 days now. Out of courisoty - my machine type is 2436-CTO, is your the same?

My machine is type 2438 2lu.
My problem is actually a bit different than yours though; I am able to turn the computer back on normally immediately after it has switched off.
The problem has happened three or four times whilst watching iplayer and once whilst working on autocad, if it had only happened whilst watching i player I would suspect somthing in the powersaving settings. Tempersatures are generally around 45 when it happens so I can rule out overheating.
For now I will keep monitoring my system for any kind of pattern.

I had/have this same problem. I believe I have isolated it to either the two bottom ram slots, usage of 32GB of ram, or usage of all 4 slots in general. If I run 16GB ram using the slots under the keyboard all is well. If I add the other two to the bottom I get random hard power shutdowns. Ive tested all the ram and it seems to be in order, I even returned my first set and tried a different brand. Im not sure at this point whether or not to request a repair or just live with the 16GB. Its not really a deal breaker but id love to get full 32GB utilization.

I have the exact same issue. Doesn't matter if it's plugged in or not, it would shut down randomly. There is no clear pattern, but it seems to do it more often 2-3 minutes after coming back on from sleep. I have 2436CTO also. I haven't contacted Lenovo because I just can't send in my machine. I use it at least 15 hours a day...

I went through the W520, tried the ram fins trick, swapped out rams, hdd... still having the same issue. In the back of my head, there's a tiny little voice saying I should have gone with the Precision 4700m...

Hi all,,
thanks for posting.
Was reading through this thread and I have to agree with some of the users here it does seem similar to the W520 case we had that has been long running.
I was just wondering though, in comparison to the W520 case we had previously, when does the shut down happen? Did you you move it around and it shuts down or was the machine placed firmly on the table and after opening an app or just some light browsing the machine shuts down? Another theing I'd Iwas to check is the surface that your machine tends to shut down to. I really can say what the issue is at the moment but there is a possibility that this could be hardware. Although at this Point I'm only assuming.
However I would like our teams to get involved in checking this issues out though. Woudl you be so kind to PM me some details of your machine. The details I require can be found below.
• Machine Family (e.g. T61)
• Machine Type Model (e.g. 7660-14A)
• Machine Serial Number (e.g. L3-234A)
• Bios version
• RAM (e.g. 2GB DDR3)
• OS (e.g. Win 7 64-bit Ultimate)
• First and Last Name
• Contact Phone Number
• Email Address
• Mailing Address
Another thing though, this particualr issue may be a bit hard to replicate as there are many factors to pplace into consideration. This was proven based from our thread for the W520. In thhis respects, in the event we may also require some users to voluteer to send their machine in for further analaysis and investigation and shoudl you be willing the send your machine to assist us with the investigation and analysis please do let me know as well with the information required above.
