I reassigned the function of the "ThinkPad Button"("Black Button", "SimpleTap button", "ThinkVantage Button", "Button Next to the Mic Mute Button", whatever it's supposed to be called) by changing the value of [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\IBM\TPHOTKEY\8001] in regedit as described here. I then uninstalled SimpleTap, and the button stopped functioning. I checked in the registry, and the aforementioned entry was gone. I tried making a new identical entry (This might have been completely ridiculous, I don't really have a good understanding of how the registry works, but it seemed logical at the time). However, this didn't have any effect.
My question is, is there any way to make this key have any function at all if SimpleTap isn't installed?

Hey pmb314,
I was reading your post and it seems another person had your idea of remapping your Thinkpad button:
