W530 & mSata

Having read all about Express Cache and mSata, I still have questions.  I want to put a mSata in my w530 for two purposes, caching and locating Pagefile.sys on it.  It looks to me since Express Cache will only use 32 GB that if I get a 64 or 128 GB mSata that I can use  the rest for pagefile, etc.  Am I right on this?

I am not interested in swapping out the HD's (Two 1 TB hard drives) for an SSD at this time, nor am I going to put the OS on the mSata.

Re: W530 & mSata

there will be free spaces on the mSATA if you are putting in a bigger tan 32 gigs mSATA.

Re: W530 & mSata

I'm using a 128GB SSD, and I wanted to have a 50GB CACHE partition on this drive. I also had problems with the Fnet HybriDisk CACHEing software (BSODs, and audio breaking up). I found this link on how to configure ExpressCache for >32GB CACHE:

Re: W530 & mSata

I doubt using the mSATA for page file or caching will improve speeds. It's still SATAII and limited to 250MB/s in my benchmarks.

If you want a great setup, buy a SSD and put a 2TB HDD in the ultrabay. This will improve speed and energy consumption.

A 2TB HDD starts at 120 EUR

Re: W530 & mSata

@OP - why do you need a pagefile?  This is ain't 1988.  You're running with 16 or 32gb of ddr3, right?  Just use your so-dimms for blazing fast r/w.  Don't turn it off but go and set your pagefile to 1GB.  Next...if your really was blazing i/o is to go and ram disk all your overhead and ditch the swap and cache via msata fixation.

Re: W530 & mSata

If the W530 mSATA slot is the same size as the W540, then the Samsung 840 EVO mSATA SSD won't fit. It is 50.8mm long, and the mSATA slot is 42mm long. The MyDigital mSATA SSD which is 42mm long will fit.

They're not. W530 uses MiniPCI Express Slot, while the W540 uses an M.2 slot

Re: W530 & mSata

Hi Takeda,

That SSD slot in the W540 is not mSATA.  It is NGFF/M.2.  A totally incompatible form factor.

The MyDigital SSD you refer to is also M.2, not mSATA - if it fits in a W540.

Regards,

Z.
