W530- connecting an external monitor via mini-display port

I have a W530 and I am trying to connect to a Dell S2740L monitor.  When doing so via RGB, no problem.  I can split the images/programs between the two separately.

when I connect to the same monitor via the mini-display port using a converter to plug the HDMI connector, the best I can do is duplicate the PC screen or have the PC screen pushed over to the monitor and the laptop screen becomes the extended one.

I can't get the PC screen to be primary and the external monitor to be secondary.

I have tried the various options using "Display" and "Screen Resolution" but none allow me to create the scenario described above.

Any suggestions?

thanks

Re: W530- connecting an external monitor via mini-display port

Do you have an external video card (K1000M or K2000M) or are you using built-in internal onboard graphics?
