hey
my w530 just arrived and i was pretty satisfied with the speed - 15s to boot; however, it was nearly intolerable to me for the fan noise. this laptop comes with a 128gb ssd and i pulled the 2nd 500gb hdd out so i am pretty sure the noise coming from the fan. i said this since i have another x220 which also comes with an ssd and it doesn't have any noise operating during most of the time; for w530, i can continuously hear the noise clearly sitting about 1.5 feet from the screen. actually this is not my first time owning a w530, my first w530 (same configuartion) arrived 1 month ago and it had the same fan noist problem so i had to request lenovo to replace a new one for me, which is current one i have at hand. have you guys met with this problem and is it normal? i admit i am sensitive to sound but it just seems too noise to me. thanks

My W520 fan is very quiet.
Which processor do you have?
(On the W520 there is a different cooling unit for the i7-29xx model - that's why I cohose the i7-28xx)
Maybe you want to include your specs in your signature line?

it is just the i7-3720 and i can hear the fan noise clearly and continuously even if i was just browsing websites.

Hey TonyLau2012,
In BIOS and Power Manager are two ways to help control your fan speeds. I would suggest you check these setting and see if it reduces the noise of the fan at idle. If not do you run a a monitoring tool like cpuz or Speedfan that gives RPMS? Could you post the RPMS at idle and the CPU load?
Best Regards,
Hiro

I am on batterie right now all settings in BIOS or Power Manager are on Batterie optimized, temperatures of CPUs are at ambient level and fan is spinning recognizable on high speed.
Unfortunately wether speedfan neither CPU Z regognize fan speeds.

What RPM is the fan running at? The range is from about 1900 to 4300.

You could also use TPFanControl to check fan RPM, CPU temp and control fan speed. (Not 100% sure if it works with new #30 series or not)

TPFan Control is working.
Minimum Fan speed is 2830 RPM.
In smart mode fan goes off and CPU temperature is around 50°. There seems to be no need to keep fan spinning at 2800 RPM.

Hi SOA
In Manual Mode, try between 1 - 3. It seems the thermal management in W530 is a bit overaggressive when under light load. It would be acceptable if the fan speed is about 4000 - 5000rpm under full load.
Have a nice day!
