What sort of RAM do I need to upgrade to 32GB?
Crucial shows a max of 16GB

No, you can have any number full/empty slots and any combination of RAM sticks but to take advantage of the (slightly increased speeds of) dual channel memory you need matched pairs.

I am about to get a RAM upgrade for my W540 also --- from Crucial since that looks like faster RAM than you can find anywhere else (I am not en expert though).
I don't see the information about pairing in the manual. Do you have any other tips? I am willing to spend what looks like $150 to get 3 sticks to fill all the slots; but I want to be informed about the pairing and actually figure out what to get. (Plus they are out of stock on some options...)
I thought :[There is 1 8GB stick in there ...] but it might actually be 2 4GB sticks. I will have to look again.
Thanks for any pointers.

You must have a quad-core processor to use all 4 slots

Hi guys, I did a little hardware installation tutorial on the W540, with the SODIMM order here:
You can also see there what kind of RAM I'm using in mine, but I have 32GB installed and not
a single hiccup since I got it.
