W540 Sleep Mode causes computer to freeze since day one!!

2014-02-04, 23:17 PM

I like how user name 'Frustrated' was already taken.

I rec'd my computer less than 2 weeks ago and have spent many hours trying to resolve the sleep issue and having to restart it by pressing on the power button for 5 seconds.

I've looked through the forums and it looks like plenty of people have had this issue, especially with the T61.

If I close the lid or put the thing into sleep mode by using the start menu, 70 percent of the time the thing will not wake up.

I've udated the BIOS, uninstalled the fingerprint reader, completely removed the Lenovo Power Controls....nothing works and it appears as if Lenovo is willing to do nothing about it.

Can I return this thing since it's been less than a month?

I've never liked Apple, but I think I'm ready to jump ship.

I do not work for Lenovo.

I don't know the return policy, but I'm sure it was included in your purchase documents.

Does everything else with the machine work as intended?

The W540 was released relatively recently, so there will surely be a few early kinks to work out.  Still, I would guess that not waking from sleep mode sometimes might be classified as a non-critical bug.  (I'm not saying it doesn't matter, just that a BSOD would be more critical, for example).

I never use sleep, so it's a little hard to understand swapping to Apple of all things, as the result of a wonky sleep function.  I hope that statement reads as intended--a simple observation, not a judgment call.

One option: put in a solid state drive, and skip Sleep mode.  Your computer may boot completely faster than most recover from sleep.  Just a thought.

Frustrated,

Any updates on this?   I would recommend you ensure power manager and BIOS are updated to the latest levels to see if this resolves the problem?

If not, I would recommend you contact service.

Best regards,

Mark

I am having the same problem but more so with hibernate then sleep. Also freezes on boot, if I leave it sit on boot it will sometimes eventually (10 minutes) boot or I just force shutdown and try and restart it again.   I did swap out the original hard drive for an Intel 250 gig SSD.  At first I used a drive clone cable to clone the original drive.  Then after having this problem I did a fresh install of Windows 8.1 (original OS for my machine)  I have tried lots of things in the bios settings.  Changed the "hard drive sleep time" to never for the SSD.  But the same problem is still there.

I am hoping a windows update or at some point a bios update will fix this. Or is will read online some post from someone smarter than me what setting will resolve this issue.

It is a bit embarrassing to try and show off my new laptop to a friend and have it not boot :-(

Anyway, I am more disappointed with the usb 3 not being BLUE and the always on usb not being YELLOW.  I know it is a little thing but it makes this $2,500.00 laptop not feel cheap. The $250.00 dock has colored connectors but not the 2,500.00 laptop! If I wanted cheap I would have bought a laptop workstation from one of Lenovo's competitors.

I do love the 3k display but do wish it was available with touch.

Same problem as Frustrated-123. Just picked up my laptop last Friday.

Can anyone think of any reasons why I shouldn't turn off all sleep and hibernate functions completely?

had similar issues (hibernation never ended, fan at full speed) until i hard switched it off by power button. then of course restart with all running programs closed. very annoying, since it was a bunch of open VMs.

i think the problem went away when deleting all unused apps (i use windows 8.1) - especially i suspect the wheater app to be the responsible one. when i accidentially activated it, most of the time afterwards i had hibernation problems. now all apps are all gone, and i did not have a single fault since then.

i guess it has to do with endless tcp/ip timeouts and wrong startup sequence of apps relying on network.

i use hibernation a lot and reboot each two weeks or so only - a huge time saver, especially on this machine, hibernate takes on the ssd around 4 seconds to finish, startup same way, booting is similar but it takes much more to set up the running environment again... so thats a "mac"-like feeling i wanted ;-) and by the way my macbook has also issues on coming back from sleep (witing for tcp timeouts) when there were disrupted network connections some times...

If you have a lot of RAM and are using a lot of it (less zero pages, so less compressible), then it might take much longer to write to disk.

All in all, I'd keep an eye out for Power Management driver and BIOS updates. These are where I'd expect fixes for these things to appear.

W520: 2960XM, Q2000M @ 1091/1380, 32GB RAM, 500GB&750GB HDD & 500GB SSD, FHD&MB168B+
X61T: L7500, 4GB RAM, 500GB HDD, XGA screen, Ultrabase
W550s: 5600U, K620M at 1164/1281, 16GB RAM, 512GB SSD, 3K touchscreen
X200s: SL9400, 6GB RAM, 64GB SD card, WXGA+ screen

catlover, Did you delete all the 8.1 apps. I have deleted most of my 8.1 apps, I still have email, explorer, calendar, people, skydrive, maps, the store, and a few others. Seemed better at first but still locking up on start and also fan running on high speed and locking on shutdown. I did update the ME Firmware to 9.0.31.1487 and no help with that one
