W540 with an external GPU, would it be possible?

Hi everyone, I was wondering if it would be possible to connect an external GPU trough the Express card adapter on my W540.

I would use this device

http://www.banggood.com/EXP-GDC-Laptop-External-PCI-E-Graphics-Card-p-934367.html

With an AMD Radeon r9 280x

+ external Monitor and power supply.

(also the r9 280x uses PCI Express 3.0 would that be an issue?)

My W540s processor is an Intel Core i7-4900MQ CPU @ 2.80GHz

Thanks!

I have that exact product from banggood. It works with 8.1(OEM) but had a lot of problems, when I upgraded to the Windows 10, I had no problems, I just had to set expresscard value to Generation 1 on the bios and then I had no problems. I tested it with gtx 560 ti dcu II and currently using GTX 680. It even comes up to the optimus option. I have not tried it on a AMD card.

Re: W540 with an external GPU, would it be possible?

Thanks for your answer!
I was thinking going with a gtx 960 or 970 but they are not
listed on the banggood website under the recommended cards. The 960 is supposed to be similar to the 680 in terms of performance, but would a 970 be overkill?
Thanks!

Re: W540 with an external GPU, would it be possible?

9 series is a good choice since you can only power it using an ac adapter with 180watts and 220 watts of power. In my case I had to use a corsair 550watts because the gtx 680 eats up a lot. 9 series has a lot of compatibility with exp gdc beast from what I heard.

Re: W540 with an external GPU, would it be possible?

Is it necessary to have a custom Bios for the eGPU to work ? and if so do you have any recommendations?

Thanks

Re: W540 with an external GPU, would it be possible?

I did not use any custom bios, just don't use that lenovo drivers for the hd 4600 and quadro. Once you are going to plug the device from the expresscard slot, go to the bios and set it first to generation 1. If only I could attach a picture I could show you where it is on the bios.

So how did it go? Have you installed one on your w540?
