Re: W541 - Replace SSD and RAM

I opted for a completely clean install. I did turn it on when I received it with Windows 7. But it was lackluster with a spinner and only 4GB of RAM. It was more exciting to boot with Win 8 Pro, two SSDs and 32GB of RAM. I'm sure you'll be able to find many Lenovo background images to use online Smiley Happy

Re: W541 - Replace SSD and RAM

I'm planning on doing the clean install myself.  I have the brand new SSD sitting on my desk, but it appears you can no longer download OEM ISO installs for Windows 7.

How are you guys doing the fresh installs on your shiny new SSD?

Re: W541 - Replace SSD and RAM

I personally am using Windows 8.1 Pro 64 bit. I don't like Windows 7 that much, takes too long to boot up and overall Windows 8.1 is faster.

Re: W541 - Replace SSD and RAM

I'm just interested where to get the OEM ISO so that I can load any version
of Windows on my new SSD.

Any ideas?

Re: W541 - Replace SSD and RAM

If you have a valid key, microsoft will allow you to download the windows 7 iso.

Re: W541 - Replace SSD and RAM

The key that comes with the W541 is an OEM key, so you can't use it to down load images from the Microsoft site.  All you can use to dowload the ISO is the 25 character Microsoft keys.  It appears that MS pulled all the images in February of 2015, so I can't download the ISO.

I'm just wondering how everyone set up their new SSD drives.

Re: W541 - Replace SSD and RAM

From what I remember, the product key is embedded I believe are embedded into the BIOS/UEFI firmware of the motherboard of the computer. I did not have to do anything special to re-install Windows on my brand new SSD. All I did was remove the original 500gb Seagate HDD and replace it with my 512gb SSD and Windows Startup automatically started when I booted up the PC.

Re: W541 - Replace SSD and RAM

Just a reminder to run the machine totally stock and see if everything works before changing software or hardware in case you need to warranty something. Also to create your recovery media.

I see. The product key is embedded as another said here. I grabbed a clean ISO of Windows 8 from Microsoft and installed that. It automatically picked up the key from the BIOS.

If your W541 came preinstalled with Win 7 (as mine did), you should be able to create recovery media using the lenovo tools. I still have the win 7 installation on the 500GB disk it came with.

Re: W541 - Replace SSD and RAM

Hi everyone,

I'm about to buy a new W541. But as you did i'd like to buy a low end configuration of storage and ram. I've read the discussion and i've really appreciated the experiences you shared here!
I'd like to ask you a couple of things further:
-1- What about the fingertips reader? I mean, after you replace the ssd, will it still work as it previously did? Is it firmware based or software based?
-2- What do you raccomend? A fresh new installation on the new SSD or just a cloning procedure from the original HHD to the new SSD?

-3- Did you use any M.2 connector (especially the one for LTE/UMTS card)? If the answare is positive, anything to mention about? Is it suitable to boot from it?
-4- Last, but not least: there will be any warranty issue because of the upgrade?

Have a nice day.

Thanks,

Claudio
