W550s UltraDock DisplayPort Issues

2015-04-09, 16:16 PM

Hello,

I have an issue where the DisplayPort will only out put a max resolution of 2560x1440. I have a Samsung UHD U28D590D external monitor that runs a 4k resolution (3840x????@60Hz). If I plug in the monitor using the UltraDock's DisplayPort, my max resolution is 2560x1440. However, if I use an HDMI cable, the max resolution is as advertised (3840x???@29Hz)

I've tried updating all the drivers on the W550s to the lates, updated the bios, and installed the recent monitor inf file.

I need the DisplayPort 4k@60Hz to work, as that's why I bought this machine! I know the display adapter supports it...it appears to just be a DIsplayPort/UltraDock issue...but I may be wrong.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Jeb

A quick update: If I use an HDMI cable, I get the full 3840x2160 @30Hz resolution. Only the DisplayPort won't give me that resolution. Ultra Dock issue?

Re: W550s UltraDock DisplayPort Issues

Hello,

I'm not familiar with the W550s, its UltraDock, or the Samsung monitor in question, but is DisplayPort cable being used a DisplayPort rev. 1.3 cable?  That seems to be the latest version of the spec, and I'm wondering if a cable certified to work at that is required to make use of that 4K display resolution.

The DisplayPort cable being used was provided with the Samsung Monitor. I would doubt it wasn't compatible with the monitor.

I've got on order a miniDisplay to Display cable that will allow me to try a direct connection from the computer. If that works, then we can safely say the dock is the issue.

An update on other troubleshooting attempted:

I tried new cables, both with DisplayPort from the dock, as well as miniDisplayPort from the machine itself (without the dock). Both have the same issue, so I guess it isn't a dock issue.

IIRC, there was a toggle in the BIOS for Basic or Advanced mode for the dock video output.

Does the dock output work in Advanced mode?

There is no such option on the W550s bios. Support told me that it's now "automatic".

Well alright. Presumably the DisplayPort is handled by the integrated graphics card, so try creating a custom resolution for it?

Under the Intel Graphics control panel, go to the Display page. Click the word "Display" at the top left next to the Back button, and click Custom Resolutions.

Accept the warning, select the correct display, then set the appropriate numbers and see if it works.

Unfortunately, I get a warning message that says that resolutoin "exceeds available bandwidth." Which makes no sense considering the specs:

I have exactly the same issue.
ThinkPad W550s with Samsung UHD U28D590D.
The cable I bought is from Lenovo mini-dp to dp.(it said the cable support 4K)

Max resolution is 2560x1440 , 60HZ.

I assume it's either W550S doesn't support 4K output(if so, it will be super stupid) or something wrong with Samsung U28 DP port..
