I have a new W550s that is underclocking itself while under load. However, the temperatures are all very low (like 60C from max temperatures. Power settings set to 100% and cooling setting are set to 100%.
When i start the application, the system is running at 3.2 Ghz
After I start the application, it goes down to 1.4Ghz when application is open but idle.
When the application requres more attention, the CPU goes down to 0.7Ghz or there about.
The whole time, the temperature is around 36C, which is still far away from max.
The desired behavior is for the CPU to maintain at least 2.59Ghz (max speed outside of boost).
This system is NO use to me in my line of work with this behavior.
The operating system is the pre-installed OS, Windows 10. Updated as suggested by lenovo and microsoft.
Using RealTemp 3.7 to measure temperatures
Clocking speed at 24% load is 99.77x14.4
Clockign speed at 98% load is 99.77 x 7.3
Utilization shown in Task manager at 99.7% load is shown as 27%
CPU seemingly downclocks the higher the utilization which would make me assume it is temperature related. But the utilization percentages as seen by task manager are way off when compared to something reading it more realistically like RealTemp.
After I go and uninstall Lenovo Active Protection -- The system seems to behave and clock to 3.11Ghz (under turbo) and 2.6Ghz under full load.
Please fix active protection with the Lenovo W550s or advise users to uninstall. Otherwise, I believe you will get a LOT of returns as it makes the system completely useless.

If you leave the machine perfectly still on a desk, does it still throttle?
It's probably the newfangled Lenovo Cool Mode, which tries to detect whether you're using the laptop on your lap (using the Active Protection System sensors). Disable this using Power Manager or Lenovo Settings.
