What next?

2019-12-27, 2:32 AM

I'm currently running 80gb of ram on my P73; I also have an Nvidia Quadro 620 graphics card and 1.5 TB of SSD internal storage. My processor is a 9th gen i7. I was wondering if my next upgrade should be ram (up it to 128gb) or get a better graphics card. It's primary purpose is CAD civil 3D 2020... and related engineering programs. Thank you for your time.

I can ensure you that laptop GPU is almost impossible to replace/upgrade unless you are an expert with that.

I would suggest you add more RAM (I believe you mean 8GB instead of 80GB). You have a mobile workstation while having only 8GB RAM really limits its actual potential.

The NVIDIA 620 GPU is soldered to the system board and is not independently replaceable.

Wait, you really have 80GB RAM? Then that's very very enough.

Also, what do you mean you can add a second graphics card? It is a laptop. DO you mean eGPU?

The p73 offers two graphics card slots... when I run civil 3d2020 I, on occasion, still get a small amount of lag

I never heard P73 has a 2nd GPU slot. I have double-checked the Lenovo website as well as the datasheet, and I didn't find any hint about it. If you mean the "Second Graphic Dongle", please... That's not a GPU slot.

And of course you got lag, P620 is NOT a top performance graphic card.

your right; it’s just a second graphics dongle. So what your saying is that the graphics card is soldered in... so it’s not possible to remove it and solder a new graphics card in?

tl;dr You cannot replace/upgrade laptop GPU.

Long answer: Technically, you can do so by modifying the motherboard. Yet unless you have a very clear idea of what you are doing, don't even think about it, since it is a very complicated process.

I remember reading that the P70 could have the GPU upgraded, and I wonder if this is the source of your confusion. The P70 and P71 had NVIDIA cards where mounted via a MXM interface which allowed them to be upgraded. The P72 and P73 do not use this interface and therefore cannot be upgraded.
