Why I can't create a USB recovery disk by "Lenovo USB Recovery Creator"

2019-10-18, 20:11 PM

Hello folks, I have a P50 working with me for more than 3 years. I am very satisfied with it.

Recently, I want to recovery the operation system by the 'Lenovo USB Recovery Creator', but I failed in the step 'select USB' while the previous steps were all normal. The dialog form is showed below. What causes the problem? I don't understand. The USB disk is emailed to me by LENOVO but it didn't work so I want to make a recovery USB drive myself. Any help will be appreciated. Thanks.

And the USB disk is 16G and I format it to NTFS and FAT32, but neither could work.

Hello,

The last time I had to make recover media for a P-series ThinkPad it required a 32GB USB Flash Drive.

Hi!

Did you say that the Lenovo-provided was mailed-in or was it a downloaded one?

You may want to look here: How can I create Recovery Media (DVD or USB), or order Recovery Media (DVD or USB) from Lenovo

I appreciate your help. I used the USB Drive which was mailed to me by Lenovo before. It is 16GB but I think the capability should not be the problem. Thanks.

I got the recovery USB drive from Lenovo before but it didn't work. So I downloaded the Creator software and wanna create the recovery USB key myself using the USB drive which Lenovo mailed to me.

Thank you for your help.

The implication of the error image you posted is that the partition size _is_ the problem. Is there more than one partition on the flash drive?  How are you partitioning and formatting it?

You might try using diskpart via a command prompt.  list disk, select disk <the flash drive>, clean, create partition primary, select partition 1, format fs=fat32 quick, assign.  Be certain you select the flash drive or you will clobber some other drive on your machine.

If that doesn't do it, try a 32GB drive.

Hi!

First thing, I would try to find why the Lenovo-provided recovery drive is not working. That, in itself, should NOT happen.

If using Windows, you can use Disk Management to manipulate partitions. You might find it easier than command-line utilities.
