Re: Will Windows 10 overcome flaky & sporadic behavior of Lenovo W520 ?

Canf Windows 10 upgrade improve the flaky (sporadic) behavior of my Lenovo Thinkpad W520:
      Model:   4276 - 37U
      Intel Core i7-2720QM @ 2.20 Ghz
Operation system:       Windows 7 Ultimate 64bi
Behavior which I have learned to live with over the past 12 to 18 months:
1.Finger print start-up occasionally fails to start:
Error Message: "No attempts to start the service have been made since the last boot".
I enter the full User password, and things continue OK until the next time.
2. After starting Windows, I get an Error Message relating to one or other of my connected hard drives:
"Windows can't stop your Generic Volume device (or Drive G:\ . . . etc.) Sometimes it says "Problem ejecting the device". I never asked Windows to stop it, so I just press OK. Sometimes it asks me "Please insert a disk into Drive E:\ "What is this about?
3. Sometimes Windows begins with the Drive F:\ Pop-up "AUTOPLAY Partition F:\ Lenovo Recovery, without me having requested this.
4. Windows Search function fails.
I have to Find and fix problems with Windows Search as 'Adminstrator' which then starts the function properly, and continues OK, until it happens again!
5. Somtimes after Windows starts I get "Chrome.exe The exception unknown software exception (oxc0000409) occurred in the applicatioin at location oOxc0006292c)

These isues seem to be Windows related and irritations or annoyances more than show stoppers.

But it would be good to know if anyone more knowledgeable than me considers that the Windows 10 Upgrade due on July 29 will help?

a. is it necessary first to cure these issues under Windows 7, before upgrading to Windows 10?

b. Is there a new updated list of Thinkpad W520 Drivers, specifically to prepare for the Windows 10 upgrade?

c. Is it better (even possible) to offload all my data, format the hard drive, and reload the basic Lenovo configuration, and all my programs and data (would take me a week of work!)

d. Or is it enough simply to run the Windows 10 upgrade on top of theWindows 7 Ultimate which I have at present.

I thank you VERY MUCH  for any insights you can help me tp solve, prevent these issues .

Best regards = John

Re: Will Windows 10 overcome flaky & sporadic behavior of Lenovo W520 ?

TBH, your Windows install is probably just corrupted or has a few bad settings. There's a chance 1 and 2 are hardware issues, but it's not certain.

If this is so, doing an in-place upgrade to 10 might bring over less than stable settings, or might fix the issues completely. A fresh install (of 7 or 10) would be better.

At this point, I'd try an in-place upgrade from Windows 7 Ultimate to Windows 7 Ultimate, which is a repair install (preserves almost all of the existing state, except Windows Updates, which need to be reinstalled).

Re: Will Windows 10 overcome flaky & sporadic behavior of Lenovo W520 ?

Hi Colonel, Thanks for the reasoned advice. I guess that you feel that - after the "repair install of Windows 7 Ultimate" (& assuming it results in a more stable OS) - the upgrade to Windows 10 should be safer. Am I correct? Meantime I wonder if the W520 has a suite of new drivers targeted on the new Windows 10 ? That might fix the issues 1. & 2. . . . Thanks again = John

Re: Will Windows 10 overcome flaky & sporadic behavior of Lenovo W520 ?

Ideally the repair install will fix all of the instability of your existing Windows 7 install. The Windows 10 upgrade might run more smoothly with a stabler Windows 7 base.

AFAIK, the W520 is not on Lenovo's Windows 10 support list, but it should run just fine (except maybe the fingerprint reader).

Re: Will Windows 10 overcome flaky & sporadic behavior of Lenovo W520 ?

Hello again,

Sorry for an other question:

To repair Windows 7 Ulimate can I use the Q:\Lenovo_Recovery disk already on my hard drive?

I see at

http://superuser.com/questions/384658/why-can-i-only-create-one-factory-backup-from-my-lenovo-thinkpad

that this has a copy of the OS.

I presume I must first create the DVDs, then I can run them to repair the existing installation.

Please let me know if this assumption is correct.

Excuse me if I am asking the obvious, but I cannot afford a stupid slip-up.

You'd have to use a regular Windows 7 disk. You can get an ISO using your product key here:

Here's a guide for a repair install:
