Will the W540's Intel HD driver ever get an update?

2016-06-03, 21:19 PM

So the Intel HD driver for the W540 - and all Optimus laptops from this generation - is 10.18.15.4256. It was released by Intel in August 2015, and it is so old that it still lists the current Win10 build as an Insider one. (Not even mentioning the Nvidia driver, which is also several months out of date). Meanwhile, the Intel-only laptops with the same GPU, such as the T440s or T540p, are on version 20.19.15.4416, released by Intel in March 2016. This driver is miles ahead of the Optimus T540ps and W540/1s. Will we ever see an update?

Update: Just checked the drivers for the P50 and P70, and they have the same issue. The Intel driver for these laptops is several months older than the computers' (US) release date.

You can download and install the latest graphic drivers from Intel and Nvidias website. But ofcourse, it is not the "tested" lenovo-version. The latest driver pack for Nvidia Quadro K2100M was released 07.06.2016.

If i remember correctly, my old Thinkpad T43p only had one video-driver release from IBM. It was highly recommended to download the latest drivers from ATI. It is still true today.

The reference driver for the quadro card works great. I have been using it for quite a while without issue, and with improved performance compared to the ancient "Lenovo approved" one. Unfortunately any Intel drivers besides the official lenovo ones refuse to install. This applies to Intel's reference drivers and the latest (version 20) drivers for non-optimus systems like the non-optimus T540p.

It may be possible to install the Intel driver anyway. The setup.exe-file that include some Intel video-drivers is extracted to Windows Temp-directory. Find the specific driver location and manually update the Intel-driver from Device Manager with the correct path.

This is common Lenovo issue with outdated drivers. While you can force the Intel generic driver to install via the "Have a disk" option in Device Manager there might be issues with brightness control, on screen display etc.

I use the same procedure on ThinkPad 8 tablet because the latest Lenovo provided driver is outdated and crashes here and there.

Guess I'll try force installing it and report back later for now...

Edit: This is what I got when I tried Have Disk

All right after more digging I was able to install Intel's reference 20.19.15.4424 driver. No issues with screen brightness or anything and the driver stopped crashing magically. Lenovo is quite a disappointment.

Thank you to whoever was reading this at Lenovo. Both the Intel and Nvidia drivers were updated to almost current versions on 06/30 for the W540 and all newer Optimus models.
