Windows 10 1903 feature update on W530

2019-07-13, 1:05 AM

I have tried several times to install the Windows 10 1903 feature update on my W530 with no success.

The update proceeds normally and then after a reboot it will get to a point where it just puts up a message and indicated it is undoing the changes.  It reboots and I am back to square one.

Last week the message in Control panel -> Windows Updates changed and said something to the effect that the new update was not compatible with my machine and it would let me know when it was ready.     I checked again this evening and it said the update was availible.  Tried the install again and it fialed the same way.

Lenovo does not mention that the update is compatible with W530 or W540 here https://support.lenovo.com/us/en/solutions/ht508488

Will I ever be able to update to 1903?

Hello,

Have you tired updating all of the ThinkPad W530's device drivers using the Lenovo Vantage or Lenovo System Update utilities before attempting to install the Windows Version 1903 update?  Also, if there is anything plugged into the ThinkPad W530 ports (USB, ExpressCard, SD Card, etc.), eject it before running the update.

Regards,

Don’t give up.

I had the same issue as you in that an upgrade would fail and roll back.

So ...

I did a clean install of 1809 from Windows 7 on my trusty W700 a few months ago figuring it would fail and I’d just toss the PC. But instead to my surprise it installed on my RAID 1 Array.

About a month ago I started the upgrade to 1903 once again figuring it would fail but it upgraded successfully.

So far the only issue I’m seeing is it won’t successfully wake from Sleep or Hibernate so I just disabled Hibernate and Fast Startup.

So if you can/want to attempt a clean install you might have a better outcome.

I did, but I just did a check again and a new BIOS has installed I'll try the update again but I doubt this will resolve the issue.

I do not have any unusual devices installed. I have also uninstalled potentially interfering applications.

It is now 3/20/2020. All this time and much research on the web, trying many failed attempts to update the OS all to no avail. Finally - a 1909 update occurs last Sunday night and install successfully. I have never been so frustrated by a stalled Windows update. The worst is I'll never know what the problem was. I can't figure out why Microsoft makes the update logging process and troubleshooting so cryptic and non-deterministic.

Re:Windows 10 1903 feature update on W530

same here on my Lenovo X240... the Windows 10 1903 update had blue-screened mid-install, every time and it was only when bios update 1.16.1 dated 10th March 2020 was installed that the 1903 update completed without it blue-screening.

even though the 1903 update was successfully installed, the laptop wouldn't re-boot and got stuck in a loop continually restarting after the POST.... it was like it couldn't see the boot image on the disk so i had to roll back to 1803 once more by deleting the previous feature update using my USB recovery disk.

I can't tell you the HOURS i'e wasted on this.... can't say if the fault is with Lenovo or Microsoft but it's all very frustrating.

I am now trying the 1909 update directly from 1803 without installing 1903 update at all and will update this thread if it works later.
