Well, the answer to your question is: it depends.
* you have your choice of TWO(only two) of the following outputs for video:
- laptop screen, VGA, DVI, DP(DisplayPort). This limitation applies if you're running off of the dock, too.
* the actual video card has a max resolution of 3840x2400, which equals four WUXGA monitors...(1920 x 1200) x 4
* If you use 30" monitors, of resolution 2560 x 1600, you're limited to two and they run off of the DVI and DPI ports(no VGA for 30" monitor).
So, if you want to use max pixels, you'd run four WUXGA monitors. Problem is, you can only plug two of these into the W700...so, what to do?
Answer, you get a line splitter. Actually, two of them. In my case, I have a Matrox TripleHead2Go digital splitter hanging off of the DVI port and a Matrox DoubleHead2Go DP splitter hanging off of the DP port. Each splitter goes to two WUXGA monitors, so I'm all set for a total of four WUXGA, or (1920 x 1200) x 4
If you want more monitors than this, you have to go with an external expansion box housing a second video card. ViDock4 might be an example of this. I also have a ViDock2(earlier version) box housing an ATI video card plugged into an ExpressCard slot. Depending upon how many monitors the second card can drive, you might significantly expand your monitors that way.
Here's a post of mine where I went into more detail on this. Adding LOTS of monitors takes LOTS of money, but getting up to eight is not too bad, other than having to buy eight monitors
