p70 randomly goes black screen

I have had my p70 for about 3 weeks and it was working completely fine for the first 2 weeks. Just in the recent week it will randomly go into black screen mode (where the display is completley black but the laptop seems to still be turned on). Once in this mode I have to force a shutdown in order to get the display to come back.

I have tried updating some video card drivers to no avail, anybody else experience anything like it?

Re: p70 randomly goes black screen

I had/have a similar problem with the intel graphics card. Only solution was to switch from the internal intel gpu to the nvidia gpu:

NVIDIA Control Panel -> 3D Settings -> Manage 3D Settings -> Tab "Global settings" -> Preferred Graphics Processor -> Select: High performance NVIDIA Processor

Might as well simply use the BIOS to eliminate Intel graphics entirely, utilizing nVidia graphics 100%: Setup -> Config -> Display -> "discrete graphics"

Re: p70 randomly goes black screen

P50 here.  Same issue -- it seems to happen when coming out of sleep,  The system is still running (if it happened to lock the screen, the finger print reader lights up, scans my finger, and then light goes out -- if I could see the screen, I'd lay money on it returning to my desktop.

If I close the lid, wait for the system to sleep (throbbing red LED) and then open it up again, the screen returns.

Re: p70 randomly goes black screen

Weird how the same thing just started happening on my P70. More or less 1 month after first use.

Screen just switches off suddenly for fraction of a second.

Re: p70 randomly goes black screen

I have an issue that may be related. I just installed PowerDVD 15 to play BluRay movies on my P70 (external drive of course). If I go to full screen, the video disappears, but the sound continues. This is highly repeatable. I switched to the NVIDIA 3000M and the problem goes away. Also, it seems that the brightness of the screen is greater at the same percentage setting. Anyone else notice this too?

Re: p70 randomly goes black screen

Doing the BIOS switch to discrete graphics fixed mine you shuld try it.

Re: p70 randomly goes black screen

Yes, that's what I did to "fix" the issue. Obviously the Intel driver is flawed. Why does all of this seem like a beta test?

Re: p70 randomly goes black screen

My P70 running Windows 10 does similar things, but usually when I have multiple external monitors plugged in. I can repeatably get 2 of the 3 external monitors to start flickering on and off when I shut the lid of the laptop. It apparently is happy running 4 monitors (including the built-in LVDS display), but unhappy only running 3 monitors when the laptop lid is shut.

I also get the same black screen everyone is talking about if my computer goes to sleep or shuts the monitors off on a power-saving timer when those external monitors are plugged in. I have to do a hard shut down in that case. Something is probably wonky with the Intel drivers since all of the display signals pass through the integrated graphics and I believe the monitor switching is handled there as well.

I don't want to go fully discreet graphics because that destroys battery life when I have to be portable.
