periodic freezes

2010-04-13, 0:15 AM
Since I got my W510 it's frozen three times. Today, April 12, March 18 and March 2. I've just now installed the latest BIOS but nothing in the changelog seems to address periodic freezes. This is also not an operating system level freeze. When I press and hold the power button and restart Windows knows nothing about it. At least nothing is mentioned in the Event Viewer. Maybe I have a bad stick of RAM but I have 8GB total and memtest86 only seems to recognize 3GB (suggesting it's a 32-bit app). Any ideas?

i have the same problem with my w510. It freezes at random and then i either have to wait as it resovles by itself otherwise i have to force a shutdown manually.

I also get a lot of lag sometimes total freezes when playing movies.

I have tried changing my video drivers...

I am running win 7 64 bit with, 4 gb ram, i7 720, fhd, 500 gb 720 hdd.

This is really bothersome as i bought it because i thought i would be reliabel.

I am having a similar problem with my W510 (4318-CTO).  I have been tracking what is attached and was occurring during the freezes to isolate the cause.  I am still frustrated.

At first I thought it was the Lenovo Power  Manager software.  I use and love it on my older TP.  I was having problems getting the unit to shut down properly and sometimes it just froze during reboot.  The only way to restart was to remove the battery while unplugged.  That really messed up my BitLockered hard drive once..

Removing Lenovo Power Manager Manager has significantly improved my freezing occurances but it has not eliminated them.  I have noticed other reported problems related to using the USB 3.0 ports.  I have had several freezes when having various perifphials plugged into the USB 3.0 ports (left side).  I am assuming this is a USB 3.0 driver problem and it will be solved in the future (hopefully real soon).  I have also learned that you cannot get the unit to start up with devices plugged into the USB 3.0 ports.

However, I recently has an instance of a BSOD with nothing but the power cord and the network cable plugged in.

In each case, the unit appears to be running hot (check the left side vent).  I also note that many times the little light on the fingerprint reader stays on after shut down both plugged into AC or on battery.  This condition is not consistent.

Sounds like some power management issues in the W510 in addition to the USB 3.0 issues..

[running a clean install of Windows 7 Enterprise, 32 bit, 4 GB RAM, all Lenovo driver and BIOS updates installed]

I too am having the same problem with this same model, win7 pro, 64bit, 4gb ram.

Today it went from "freeze" to complete crash (complete and instant power off).

I called lenovo tech support and they walked me through a "de static" procedure (shut down, remove power supply, remove battery and press power button 10 times).  Not sure that will do it, but am happy to try step 1 in their process and we'll see what happens next.

Could just be we all got a bum RAM chip, if I get another lock up that will be my next test I guess.

I have owned my w510 since end of may and have also had theese freezes. It has to be corrected soon!

It happends when playing movies, music and today it happened when opening a pdf file.

There is though a particular pattern. When ever it freezes I take of the battery (and power cord if it was connected) and press the on button 5-10 times (destatic measure). The following power on has never frozen. I think the lenovo engineers ought to read this thread!!!

The problem is a defective system board.  The solution is a system board replacement.  You need to call Lenovo support and insist they replace your system board.

Got my W510 yesterday. Attempted to set it up today. I tried to open the CD/DVD drive and it froze up. Called tech support because after powering it off, I could never get it to come back on. They told me system board. I could send it in for repair or call sales on Tuesday to request a new one. I opted to call sales on Tuesday. I am going to see if I can just return for a refund. This would be my second return, first one was ordered wrong and was rebooked with this one. I think I am tired of waiting. By the looks of this message board, it appears that they are "lemons". A thread here with someone having trouble with 30 of them freezing?

Re: periodic freezes

I have had mine (W510, Win7 64-bit, 8GB, with USB 3.0) for a week. While switching a 2.0 flash drive between the various USB ports to see if it is recognized, my system started acting strange. It would not recognize the flash drive and it would not shut down normally. I powered it off, but when I tried to power it back on, it would not come up. I disconnected the AC, but it still would not power back on until I removed the battery. Not sure what happened. Not happy to see these problems. I chose Lenovo for reliability.

I have got my system board replaced a week ago and it is working without any freezes so far. I think the problem has been fixed and i am a very happy w510 owner. The best thinkpad i have ever had...

Re: periodic freezes

I have had my computer for about 2.5 months and am also having this issue.  It freezes and the only way to restart is hard reboot holding down power button.  I just updated the using the available thinkpad updater updates, bios and nvidia features, and had a freeze since.

I am not sure of the cause but at startup windows does recognize the freeze asking if i want to boot in safe mode.  I have seen no relationship between a specific program or activity and the freezes.  I am averaging a freeze every 2-3 days.

Anyone else experiencing them at this frequency?

I may try removing the power manager next, can windows manage that instead?
