Just opened up my new w510 to find that there is some kind of hardware malfunction. Don't know if it happened during shipping or just a lemon. I can boot in safe mode but I get the blue screen when loading regularly. Anyone else experience the same thing?

I have also received my W510 this morning, and BSoD keeps showing up... I can't even enter Windows.. the blu.e screen shows up right after the login.
I talked to Lenovo technical support.. They told me that they are going to call me back in 2-3 hours, but I haven't got the call yet. ![]()
Any idea how can I get rid of this blue screen? I can't even get into the Lenovo Recovery software through F11 key.

I finally got my machine on the 12 Feb 2010, after waiting almost three weeks. Everything worked fine, and I was able to complete the installation of Win 7 Pro 64bit. I put in my sim card into the 3g modem slot where the battery goes, and was able to connect to the internet with no issues. Then I decided to switch off my wireless network via the Fn+F5 click, from there everything has gone downhill. I got a blue screen, and machine reboots, as soon as it tries to log back into windows it reboots again. I eventually restored the factory defaults via the Rescue & Recovery utility. But i still could not complete the installation of Win 7, I eventually disabled the wireless devices via the BIOS. And then finally manged to complete the windows installation. Thereafter I inserted my sim card into the 3g modem, and yet again i get the same blue screen. By now I was boiling over with frustration, so I decided to take the machine to IBM service repair centre, hoping that they might have a solution, or better still classify it as DOA (thus i get a new machine). But this does not seem the case, seems the technicians don't know the diference between Win 7 and Win XP. Coz they decided to remove the hardrive and test with another hard drive that has Win Xp loaded. They call me back and tell me that they must reinstall the OS, as it is a software problem. I totally disagree. I am now going to escalate this issue to the manager. So much for buying the latest and greatest notebook.... Feel now that I have wasted my money....

When I received the machine, I wiped everything, including the recovery partitions, then reinstalled Windows 7 64bit. As far as Win XP and Vista, they say to install it in a certain order. First, I'd download all the latest drivers for your OS which can be found here:

Copy them over to a memory stick along with any windows service packs
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads (i think this is right) Download the redistributable for IT pros version of the service pack.
Don't forget to update the BIOS... it's on the IBM site listed above. You might do that right after you install the OS, then go with the drivers.
Then pop in your OS (operating system) CD and boot to it. Modify your partitions (or not), format the partition you want to install (via advanced options on the partition screen (windows 7 or vista)), then choose that partition and install there (or say next). After you sucessfully install the operating system, you should install in this specific order:
1) the latest service pack, 3 for XP, 2 for Vista, and there isn't one currently for Win 7
2) Intel driver INF file (Intel series chipsets)
3) for Win 7, i'd install the Rapid storage technology driver and the USB 3.0 driver
4) the rest of the drivers
5) windows updates
6) applications
This is a general overview of what needs to be done. This install order was for WinXP and WinVista, not sure if Win7 follows the same, but it doesn't hurt

Did you wipe everything because you wanted to avoid the BSOD issue?
and when you say reinstall Win7 did you make a backup disk from the recovery partition?

Same issue with my W510 (Windows 7 Professional, 64 bit, 8Gb RAM, Corsair X256 SSD). Have tried return to factory setup and plain vanilla Windows 7 install (Retail version, with only the Qualcomm Gobi & NVIDIA drivers installed), no change. Didn't initially have this problem and then was intermittent & now continual. The only way to boot without the BSOD is without the SIM card in.

I didn't know there was a blue screen issue... but I always wipe every machine I get just because I've got the knowledge and I always partition my hard drive so I can keep the OS and Data drives a little more separate. I also don't like some of the stock programs and feature like programs from Lenovo/IBM so it's just easier to wipe and start fresh. My instructions above skipped some steps assuming you folks could figure out to click next w/o me saying.

Solved this issue (at least for me), you need to downgrade the Qualcomm driver to 1.1.80, which came in the factory (original) installed OS on my W510. 1.1.90 installs on TV System Update, which appears to cause the SIM Card BSOD issue.

I had the SAME problem with BSoD. I found that it was related to the WiFi part. If I turned off WiFi, it would not BSoD. I have NOT been able to get a resolution to having Wi-Fi on and this not being an issue. The Lenovo rep had "never heard of this problem" before.

Maybe new drivers would help... Intel just released new wireless drivers for their adapters. Version 13.1.1.0 or something to that effect.

On the left hand side, scroll down to "Wireless Networking", now the the middle column, choose your area, ususally the top covers the 6200, 6250, 6300 N series. Now choose your OS. If you actually like Lenovo's network manager, I'd just download the driver, if you'd like to manage it with intel, choose the software download, which has both the driver and intel manager program. Of course, if you download the program, you can always let the Lenovo program or windows manage the wireless card.
