Can a Thinkpad Yoga S1 connect to a 5120x1440 external monitor?

2020-05-18, 18:53 PM

Hey, I'm running Win10, 64bit on my Yoga Thinkpad S1 (Yoga Laptop (ThinkPad) - Type 20CD - Model 20CD00B1US).

I want to buy a 5120x1440 display (Samsung C49RG90 49-inch Super Ultrawide Curved Gaming Dual WQHD 1440p Monitor).

Would my laptop support the native resolution of this monitor?

(My graphic connection is mini-HDMI.)

Thanks!

Not according to the spec:

https://psref.lenovo.com/syspool/Sys/PDF/ThinkPad/ThinkPad_Yoga/ThinkPad_Yoga_Spec.PDF

"Maximum external resolution: 1920x1200 (Mini HDMI)@60Hz"

I am now writing this comment using the same laptop perfectly connected to a 2560x1080 screen, which proves that the stated max of 1920x1200 is false :) Any advice?

Don't know what to tell you.  I've only got the docs to go on.  I don't spot any BIOS changes - on a quick look - that indicate the graphics limitations were changed.

2560x1080  and 1920x1200 have fairly similar pixel counts, so they may both fall within whatever the actual limitation is.  Or not...

Sorry I can't be of help.  Hopefully others here have tried your target setup.

[edit to add] This probably won't answer the question to you satisfaction but you may find it interesting:

Thanks! The secret I think is the max resolution of Intel HD 4400, which is said to be: Maximum HDMI Resolution 4096x2160 This is *higher* in pixel count to my goal resolution of 5120x1440. Do you think then this would work? See: https://www.pugetsystems.com/parts/Video-Card/Integrated-Intel-Mobile-HD-Graphics-4400-9892

I was editing while you posted ;)  I can't answer your question personally, but looking at the 4400 in-CPU specs it seems iffy.

Re:Can a Thinkpad Yoga S1 connect to a 5120x1440 external monitor?

Just got my new 5120x1440 screen and it's working fabulously on my oldish laptop with HDMI 1.4 and Intel graphic processor HD 4400.

Haha, and Lenovo says the max external resolution is 1920x1200 ... funny!

On the other hand I do think I'm working with 30Hz; but I don't mind this.

Thanks for your help! You helped me to get this right!
