Re: Headphone noise in Edge s430

2012-12-20, 20:10 PM

Well, I got my computer back from technical support, and I finally have some time to write about my experience. Shortly: problem not solved.

The revision was quite fast, considering that my computer was sent from France to Germany and back (at their expense). The whole process took about a week, including shipping. So this was pretty good. BUT, the noise is still there and I got a report saying that they run their routine tests on my computer and couldn't find my problem. The tests listed don't seem terribly relevant for my problem, but I suppose they did plug some headphones and tried to find the noise. To verify that I'm not having auditory hallucinations, I had other people confirm to me that there is a noise. There is. For sure, it's not permanent, but I did remember to mention this to the support assistant over the phone.

I'm slowly getting used to have to wait until the sound goes, and avoiding to apply even the slightest pressure on the areas sorrounding the headphone connector, but this is frustrating. I'd demand a second revision, but I can no loger afford not to use my computer for another whole week! If they just had a proper local support centre... :(

Hola. Lamento escuchar lo infructuoso del soporte... Aunque es para tenerlo en cuenta. :S

Gracias!

With the pardon of our anglophone friends, I shall reply in Spanish since the following is not directly relevant to the topic.

It's frustrating to see how Lenovo fails to provide proper support for Windows 8, even for a device as new as ours, while pushing their new shiny line of touchy-bendy Win8 laptops. Have we been already forgotten? For shame!

Hi emannigol.

I have exactly the same problem. I have tested my audio jack (headphones) with the stock Win 7 home premium and a fresh installed Win 7 pro (64 bit). I have tested the Microsoft stock audio driver and the realtek driver and it’s definitely a hardware problem.

Have you tested the Audio Jack in Games? When the NVIDIA Card starts the hiss is very loud and absolutely terrible.

I contact the support too and it is still in process. Fortunately I bought the 3 year Onsite Next Business Day Upgrade.

The technician wants to switch the mainboard but the audio jack is mounted on a separate card on the left side. The last help from the Lenovo support was “check your driver”. I have already checked all drivers and software :-( I’m still waiting for a solution.

Re: Headphone noise in Edge s430

I agree that it's a hardware problem. It happens with Windows 7, Windows 8, and Ubuntu, and seems to be correlated with CPU and/or GPU activity (though I haven't tried any games, I don't play any). Also, sometimes I happen to rest my eblow on the corner of my laptop, or next to it, gently pressing against the base of the audio cable, and this triggers the noise, which usually fades as quickly as the pressure is released. Hardware, hardware, hardware.

After a couple of months of use, I'm honestly not sure if the noisiness has declined or I've just become more used to it (I hope not, because I shouldn't have to accustom myself to a fabrication flaw in such an expensive device). Now it seems to last less than a minute (generally), and can sometimes be fixed by fiddling with the cable (but the noise can come back with the slightlest mechanical disturbance, as I just pointed out).

You're luckier than me though, as you're already in Germany and things should work faster for you if you have to send you computer to the Support Centre. I couldn't even get them to realise there is a problem. They returned my computer saying that they couldn't detect anything with their standard tests. Have you been more succesful demonstrating the existence of this problem?

I'd much appreciate if you could keep us informed of the development of your case. I you find a solution, maybe I could try using your case as a reference for Support to help me as well.
