Thinkpad Twist HD Upgrade to SSD

2012-11-18, 20:47 PM

I just purchased a new thinkpad twist. I am thinking about upgrading the HD to SSD. Is there anything special I need to know? Can i just pop out the HD and put in the SSD drive? I'm looking to increase battery life.

According to one of the reviews I read you had to do some changes to the BIOS in order to use an SSD,  the reviewer did not get into the changes made.

So, I bought a standard 2.5" SSD - doesn't fit.. looks like the Twist uses the 1.8" form factor, which appears to be much more expensive.

I regret that I'll be selling the laptop :/

That's terrible. Wait, is that really true? Can you post a picture of the size difference? Is it too vertically thick [7mm vs 9.5mm] or is it actually too wide sideways? A 1.8mm hard drive slot will be completely too small, whereas a 7mm slot will just be too thin, but the width and length are the same.

I'm hoping that it might be just a 7mm drive height (like a Samsung 830), since the spinning HDDs go up to 500GB. Is there such a thing as a 1.8-inch 500GB hard drive?

What about the mSATA drive that's used for the cache SSD? Is there a setting in the BIOS to boot from the mSATA drive, and will it accept a Crucial M4 mSATA?

Honestly, if the Twist doesn't have any upgrade options, I'm going to break down and spend all my money on the x230t...or the infernal blasted iPad. Ick.

Surprised to see that. On the crucial website, they guarantee compatibility specifically with the Lenovo Twist on the 2.5" (7mm) ssd. http://www.crucial.com/store/mpartspecs.aspx?mtbpoid=90CB62AEA5CA7304

Does anyone know what type of caching software is used for the 24GB msata ssd on the Twist? I believe it is ExpressCache sw, but i didn't find it loaded on one of the demo units I saw in the store. I am thinking of buying one this weekend.

That (the 1.8" drive) is odd.  This is what the edgebook (ThinkPad Edge Notebooks ) says:

Hard Disk Drive / SATA 3.0Gb/s, 2.5" wide, 7mm high, Active Protection System™,
removable, upgradable

I don't have one to check.
