Thinkpad Yoga 12 (2nd gen) couldn't update to Windows 10 Pro 20H2 from 1909

2021-06-24, 16:47 PM

Hi All,

I've been trying to update my Windows 10 Pro version 1909 as it has reached the end of service, but I've reached a stumbling block.

I've tried the Windows Update in the Update & Security section of the Settings, but for unknown reasons it has always stuck consistently at 61% during the installation, as seen below. I left it overnight after reaching 61% but woke up the following morning still at 61%.

I've also tried the Windows Update Assistant, but it's also stuck at 99% installation. I don't have a screenshot of that one unfortunately, but I've also tried it several times already, and the results were always the same. I had also tried to leave it overnight after reaching 99% just in case it needed that much time to complete the installation, but alas, I had no luck with it as well.

I noticed on Lenovo's website that this particular laptop isn't on the list of Lenovo devices tested for Windows 10 20H2. (Link: Lenovo devices tested for Windows 10 20H2 - Lenovo Support US), so does this mean that I'm stuck with Windows 10 version 1909 for the time being?

Would really appreciate for any help to solve this matter, as version 1909 no longer receives security updates (please correct me if I'm wrong) and it's a big deal to me.

Cheers,

Gabe

Hi @Lorenzo_Lenovo ,

Thank you for the response. After digging the internet, I finally found what went wrong with regard to my ThinkPad Yoga 12's Windows 10 upgrade issue. It had something to do with the Conexant Audio Driver, where a small workaround was needed in order to successfully upgrade to Windows 10, 20H2 version. I am now running Windows 10 20H2.

Cheers,

Gabe

Hello GabeGabe,

Welcome to Lenovo Community

Those listed machine are certified tested models for the mentioned build, this however do not limit users from doing the updates.
Usually there maybe pre requisites needed by the device from Microsoft that maybe preventing from using it where you can check with them.
Alternatively, if you have a back up of your files and a good plan to go back if things do not work well for you then , downloading the stand alone build version can also be an option.

Can you please share that workaround?  I have the same generation Thinkpad yoga, with the same issue.

Hi @ Rhino-gwa,

I'll try to write it down as best as I can remember to retrace the steps, since I'd already forgotten the steps after I succeeded in updating my Windows version.

Here goes:

1. Go to 'Device Manager'

2. Click on 'Sound, video and game controllers'

3. Double-click on 'Conexant SmartAudio HD'

4. Click on the 'Driver' tab

5. Click on 'Update Driver'

6. Select 'Browse my computer for drivers'

7. Select 'Let me pick from a list of available drivers on my computer'

8. Select 'High Definition Audio Device'

9. Ignore the 'Update Driver Warning' and click on 'Yes'

10. Follow the remaining process, if any, to have the 'High Definition Audio Device' as the installed driver

Now you can update to Windows 10 20H2.

Note that I actually deleted the Conexant SmartAudio HD before going into step no. 5, but I've read in some forums that you don't actually need this step (because even if you deleted the Conexant driver, when you're downloading the Windows 10 20H2, the system recognizes that the Conexant driver is missing and it will automatically re-download the software and re-install it as the driver (unless you have selected the 'High Definition Audio Device' (or anything other than the Conexant driver) as the driver) and you'll get stuck again at 61% installation. I can verify this as I've experienced this myself). So as long as you have selected the 'High Definition Audio Device' as the driver, theoretically you should be good.

Credit goes to somebody with the name handle @zazoucsh-8159 on Microsoft's official forum page. I don't know the policy here on posting a link to another website so I'm not going to provide it here, unless if someone asks and can clarify the policy on such matter. Out of the dozens of solutions to this issue that I've read, theirs were the only one pointing out that we need to replace the Conexant Smart Audio HD with 'High Definition Audio Device' and not just simply delete the former.

Hopefully I got the steps right, and hope this helped.

Cheers,

Gabe
