Thinkpad Yoga S2 - HDD Upgrade Options

2015-02-28, 3:08 AM

I'm looking at ordering one of the new, second generation Thinkpad Yoga 12's.  I'd like to upgrade both the M.2 and 2.5" drives.  I know that the M.2 is 42mm, and the 2.5" is 7mm.  I've found drives that will fit, but I'm concerned about the BIOS whitelist.

Here are the drives I'm looking at:

- Transcend 256 GB SATA III 6Gb/s MTS400 42 mm M.2 SSD Solid State Drive TS256GMTS400

WD Blue 1TB Laptop 7mm Hard Drive: 2.5 Inch, SATA 6Gb/s, 5400 RPM, 8MB Cache WD10SPCX

Samsung 850 EVO 1TB 2.5-Inch SATA III Internal SSD (MZ-75E1T0B/AM) (If I splurge and go SSD)

Any thoughts?

Also, does anyone know yet if the S2's will be free of the ghosting issue?  If not, I'm going to have to go with the Aspire R7 Broadwell.

Sorry to bump this, but this is the only thing holding me back from pulling the trigger.  Does anyone have any insight on whitelist issues, or anything else I should consider before buying these drives and tossing them in there?

I don't know of any HDD whitelists.

I also can't find the Yoga S2 Hardware Maintenance Manual, so I dont know if you'll need to do anything fancy involving the HDD caddy, if there is one.

Well, I guess I'll just pull the trigger and hope that the BIOS accepts the drives.  I wish they gave you more configuration options for building one from the factory.

Thanks for following up!

One other thing.  It looks to me like the i5-5300U is the sweet spot on CPU.  Anyone see an argument for going with the i7?
