Re: Thinkpad Yoga Touchpad Driver Issue

2014-01-07, 2:55 AM

First day with a brand new Thinkpad S1 Yoga and I'm ready to throw it against the wall due to the trackpad issues.

Every time I boot, I get to see IF I will have a mouse pointer to use.  Only a reboot solves this.

Then, when the pointer is visible, right click may or may not work.

Most annoyingly, the touchpad goes in and out of responsiveness.  Sometimes it will take seconds for the trackpad to recognize movement.  Scrolling and click+drag rarely work.

I do most of my work in Excel and if this trackpad issue is not resolved, this machine is going back.

I have tried the PS2, and both versions of the touchpad driver as well as a bios update and the adventure continues.

HELP!!

OK, I figured out how to solve this. Its was a real bugger. Here's what I did, not sure if every step was needed, but it ended up working and I'm sure not going back to figure out what finally made it work:

1) Factory Reset the machine

2) Boot up again, mouse still doesn't show. Uninstall all of the mouse drivers. There are several. I had to enable each one, and uninstall each one one-by-one. Don't reboot computer each time, otherwise it will re-install the drivers. I'm not sure why.

3) Now once everything is gone, re-boot windows. Go into bios and select the option that says something along the lines of check for hardware (again, didn't record it exactly). The beep-beep errors go away.

4) Re-boot into Windows. Still no mouse, but when you click show hidden in device manager it should say PS/2 enabled mouse. It will say device not found. Now click update, and scan for hardware changes.

5) Reboot and it will somehow magically work.

Unfortunately, none of the gestures work on the trackpad but its better than not having one at all!

Two quick questions ...

1. Is there an easy way to save installed apps so that the restore process after factory reset is somewhat painless?

2. Am I out of line to think that reducing the touchpad to have no advanced features just to get basic functionality is not a satisfactory solution for a business machine at this price point?

Thanks for posting!

1. Well, if you have apps from the windows store those should be easy to restore. Otherwise, just save a list of the uninstalled apps and re-install them. IDK, thats really the best I can think of.

2. I don't know, I'm not a Lenovo representative. I definately think this is not a very good thing that's going on.

Did the service center indicate that they would be able to fix this or was this just speculation on their part?

How long would you have to leave it with the service center?

Thanks for the updates!

What was the solution to this problem?  Was it a hardware problem?

I am seeing the exact same behavior.  Sometimes I can get it working by uninstalling Thinkpad Ultranav driver and just using the native Windows 8.1 driver.  However, eventually it goes back to a broken state:

This device is not present, is not working properly, or does not have all its drivers installed. (Code 24)

Device ACPI\LEN0042\4&464a2d0&0 had a problem starting.

If it is not visible in your device Manager, it is hardware issue.

At least this was the cause of new yoga replacement which couldn't be sorted by BIOS or driver update.

Thanks for the response.

I have reinstalled Windows 8.1 on another Yoga.  Also I reinstalled Windows on the orginial unit with the issues.

I am interested to see if the issue returns on either of these.
