Thinkpad Yoga - bitlocker with USB key unreliable

2013-12-03, 16:18 PM

I have an unreliable boot issue with Yoga, bitlocker and USB sticks. I have made following configuration with I5,8GB, 500GB Yoga: Hard disk is replaced with Samsung 840 Pro 256GB SSD, clean W81 x64 Pro installation, turned on bitlocker, enabled TPM startup policy for bitlocker in GPEdit. The whole disk is encrypted and it uses hardware encryption of the SSD. In bitlocker the OS startup decrypt is configured to use USB stick, and the key is stored in the USB.

The problem is that when booting, Windows frequently asks to insert a USB stick and press enter to retry. After several retries the system starts correctly. I have tried several sticks, and all have same issue in this PC. They all did work when tested on older Yoga 13 having bitlocker installed with Windows 8.0 . I am suspecting that the new Yoga has some timing issues with USB during boot. Has anyone else tried similar configuration?

I am using now PIN code to open bitlocker, and that works flawlessly.
