Thanks, I don't know how I missed that! They replaced it with the same screen: LP125WF2-SPB1. :( I guess I'll have to wait and see if it comes back before warranty runs out in March. :(

Betreff: Thinkpad Yoga - ghosting / after-image / watermark issue

2014-08-30, 2:49 AM

So after hearing about new panels from Mark_Lenovo

I sent my TPY to one of Lenovo's authorized service center in Vancouver.

They told me if technician could not find the flaw(Ghosting) it would cost me $95 as service charge.

Hopefully he/she can find it and replace my screen. I will update when I get my TPY back.

You had to look at the part # when it was installed

Update: it seems I might have spoken too soon. I had just filling in the repair form last week and was ready to send the TPY back in, when I decided to check it one last time. To my surprise, on the first test the image retention was significantly less than the day it came back from repair. After further tests it got even better, up until the point that the ghosting is now almost completely gone. There's no point in returning it now, so I'll wait a few weeks and see if deteriorates again.

Has anybody ever heard of the panel getting better with time instead of worse?

Nope, because the screen is aging so it normally gets older. My estimation is that the screen isn't that bright, maybe because of the automatic brightness controll.

Makes sense, only that the brightness was at 100% when I tested I turned the automatic brightness off. I'll check again every few days.

Is there a keyword to remember for the new screens, and any idea when they will popup? My TPY, while great is kind of fireworks in terms of screen ghosting. :) (better to takes this with humour)

UPDATE

So I'm at a little over two weeks with my TPY and I have been using it everyday for 6 hours a day; taking notes with pen and watching videos. I have not had any ghosting issues at all so the SPB2 version definitely works (unless I just jinxed myself and next week it will ghost).

For those looking to buy one, but worried about ghosting, as I was; buy directly from Lenovo. They are using new panels (at least mine and someone else I know who purchased one direct recently.) If you buy from a 3rd party, chances are you're gonna get an old unit with ghosting problems. If you call on the phone, you can talk them down 15% off the price (I believe this is their max.) Also, you will have a direct contact for after your purchase, if there are any issues.

UPDATE

Hi at all,

so finally I got my TPY back after 3 days and I testet the display with the checkerboard test. I couldn't see the ghosting effect so I hope it's gone now.

I took a look into the system info. Lenovo replaced the display panel with the exact same model (LP125WF2-SPB1).
I will have an eye at the ghosting problem in the future, maybe it will come back after a few weeks, I hope not (touch wood).

Last but not least I have to say that I'm impressed about the lenovo technical support. Everything was fine.

So I hope I could give you some helpful information, I follow this thread and keep you updated if the ghosting effect returns to my TPY.

Marshal
