Re: Thinkpad Yoga - ghosting / after-image / watermark issue

2014-09-16, 0:57 AM

So I got my TPY back from the service center, and just like I guessed the technician did not change panel to SPB2. However this SPB1 model does not have ghosting yet. I've ran the 10 minute grid test, and ghosting did not appear. As soon as it appears, I will go to other service center and ask to switch to SPB2 panel.

Update: STILL waiting on them to send the new panel out to the technician a month after that failed repair attempt.

Even after many emails and calls they seemingly haven't made any progress.

This is turning into a farce.

I've been thinking about getting the replacement for my SBP1 panel (production date Feb 2014). However, after reading many of these messages/comments here I will hold off.

The weird thing is that the ghosting is mostly visible on the taskbar when switching back and forth between the desktop and the Win8 start screen but it seems to be most dominant after a "cold" boot. When working on the machine for a prolonged period of time, it's still visible but less pronounced.

There are some funky electrical/magnetic things happening in that screen...

The ghosting on my machine was near non-existent when I got it about six months ago. It's been getting progressively worse, but only noticeable in a few backgrounds. Like my others, I want to get my screen replaced, by the experiences reported so far have been discouraging.

The ghosting really doesn't bother me that much visually, but what bothers me is having to disclose that whenever I go to sell it, which is going to kill the resale value. The longer I hold onto it, the worse the ghosting is going to get and the less money I'll get whenever I'll sell it. I really hope they have an actual fix for this before my warranty expires.

Mark, is there any chance of there being a 1920x1080 TN screen with a digitizer developed for the thinkpad yoga instead of an IPS panel? I never understood the point of IPS... you're getting a wider viewing angle in exchange for a slower response time and potential ghosting.

Holy balls I'm really annoyed right now.

So the technician gives me a call this morning saying that he's got the new screen ready and is coming over soon to change it out.

When he gets to my place, he opens up the box and guess what?

IT"S THE WRONG PART AGAIN.

Once again Lenovo Support sent me a 1080p screen without the WACOM digitizer layer on the back.

And after a month of waiting for that part, too.

If they screw up again I'd rather get a new Yoga in exchange or a refund. This is getting ridiculous.

Hi, I got today my second screen replacement, the model is SPB1 again. Currently no ghosting at all, but let's see how much it lasts this time.

TN, really? Just because there is an issue with this particular IPS panel having an unusual amount of ghosting, I don't see that as a good reason to now want TN panels. TN has it's own disadvantages. I can't stand looking at pictures and videos on laptops with TN panels, and with a convertible the viewing angle issue would be even more irritating. As for fast response times, this isn't marketed as a gaming machine. I think they should just focus on fixing whatever the issue is with this IPS panel.

Good point, I didn't think about using it in tablet mode. The reason I asked about the TN screen was because the x240 has the same screen size but the 1920x1080 version is the same ips panel. Was just curious if there was any alternative panel however.

Well as I said before I'd gladly take a TN panel to avoid those catastrophic ghosting effects. And actually TN panels aren't that bad I took this picture from my TN Screen and as you see viewing angles are not an issue at all, as you can see here: TN angle snapshot

Of course you shouldn't take the cheapest of the TN panels. Still a working TN definitly better than a defective IPS. Another alternative would be the PLS Panels from Samsung. I did some research on the internet, Apples Retina MacBooks which were produced with mixed display types both IPS and PLS, had the same issues with the IPS panels (LG) but seemingly never with Samsung's PLS panels. Though I think that lenovo has no contracts with Samsung and thus we won't be seeing PLS panels any time soon.
