Re: Thinkpad Yoga - ghosting / after-image / watermark issue

2014-10-13, 19:25 PM

I bought my Thinkpad Yoga in April and started noticing this ghosting issue a few months into owning it.  It definitely gets worse over time.  It's absolutely terrible now.  I've been following this thread for some time and it seems like the problem has been acknowledged but they are replacing faulty displays with a revised but still faulty display.

Besides being incredibly annoying to even use my Thinkpad at this point, my 1 year warranty experation approaches.  Does anyone know how Lenovo deals with faulty displays after the warranty expires?  Should I issue a ticket now to get my computer into the system so that I can use that as proof of ongoing defect prior to experation of the warrenty? Please advise community.

I've been following this topic ever since I started looking for a new laptop back in July 2014.

Unfortunately even the new panels seem to have the ghosting problem. I do not believe this problem will be resolved and started looking at the competition.

The Panasonic Let's Note RZ4  seems to be one of the few alternatives If you a looking for a specific form factor.

Too bas Panasonic is only selling those in China Japan. Not in Belgium..

According to Amy_Lenovo on the forum, their level 2 team is currently investigating the new (SPB2) panels. I love my Yoga but the ghosting is killing me so I have my fingers crossed for a real solution.

Hey Everyone,

So far I have not seen any solution other than Hardware replacement to solve this issue. However, I have been playing around with the screen and color settings and I have noticed several things:

  • Ghosting tends to occur on mostly darker solid colors, greys, blues, and dark reds.
  • Whitest whites and darkest darks dont seem to show any ghosting
  • When the screen is refreshed (i.e. restarting the machine, shutting the lid) The ghosting dissapates much more quickly.

My solution was to set a black or white solid background on my start screen, which makes the ghosting almost completely disappear and now does not bother me at all. I have also not noticed any damage to the screen over time, or lasting burn in any sense.

Hope this helps

Re: Thinkpad Yoga - ghosting / after-image / watermark issue

Alright, time for a final update. Last week I received notice that my TPY was repaired and ready for me to pick up. Despite my specific request for a replacement with the SBP2-display, it turns out they replaced my motherboard and called it a day. (Or five weeks, to be precise.) I asked to test the laptop right there in the store to save myself and extra trip, and lo and behold: the ghosting was still as bad as when I sent it in. Did they expect me not to test it after a second repair? Or to just give up and stop bothering them?

Luckily for me, the after sales rep had read up on the issue in the mean time. He agreed that there was no permanent fix and  gave me a full refund (in the form of store credit). I'm not sure what I will use it for, but I will certainly not buy or recommend Lenovo again.

This will probably be my last post on this forum. Good luck to all of you!

Hoping to balance out some of the negativity here - it's been over a month since my Yoga was repaired

for the screen, and still no sign of the ghosting making a comeback.

I still have an SPB1 panel.

It's a shame a lot of others arent having much luck with their fixes.

I just spent a decent amount of time writing my experience with the Yoga Thinkpad but for some reason my post didnt publish.

Anyways in short I bought the Lenovo after a live chat sales rep told me that they addressed the issue a long time ago and I have nothing to worry about.

I bought it in the microsoft store in Toronto Ontairo. The unit in store had ghosting.

My unit has a decent amount of ghosting that I suspect will get worse over time. It was manufactured week 0 2013 and its SBP1.

Despite the ghosting issues, I really like this laptop to a degree that I may consider keeping it if the issue doesn't actually get fixed by Lenovo.

I looked at your other pictures and notice you were questioning the screenbrightness which I too found to be a little bit dark. Is this typical of laptops in your experience ?(This yoga is the first one I've ever really owned)

Today my screen was replaced. No signs of ghosting. Let's hope it will keep that way.

Re: Thinkpad Yoga - ghosting / after-image / watermark issue

Some members of the Lenovo forums reported image retention issues on their ThinkPad Yogas.

Please see earlier Lenovo advisories in this thread

Summary:  As a result of an investigation, Lenovo released a service tip to replace original SPB1 IPS panels exhibiting these symptoms with the SPB2 panel. Lenovo then investigated additional reports of SPB2 panels displaying image lag. At this time, Lenovo has concluded that the IPS SPB2 panels are working as designed.

If your ThinkPad Yoga SPB1 panel is exhibiting persistent ghosting, please contact Lenovo Service for support and reference Service TIP #SF14-T0064/ HT082470.

Thank you to everyone who contributed feedback.
