Upgrading SSD

2021-07-11, 10:07 AM

Hey, so I’m thinking of upgrading the ssd to a TB from 256GB, I was wondering if it would affect my windows license and how would I go about reinstalling windows? Thanks in advance!

Welcome to the community forum.

Generally replacing an SSD doesn't affect Windows activation. In any case the key is stored in the system BIOS so even if you do a clean install on a new SSD, Windows will activate automatically.

To add to that, as long as you install the version of Windows that originally came with your machine, activation should be automatic and tied to the system's board.

What I mean if you had Windows 10 Home, make sure your re-install is also the Home Edition and not the Pro edition.

Depending on your machine, Lenovo has a recovery media tool that can create a bootable USB with the original image of your operation .  You can find that here: https://support.lenovo.com/il/en/solutions/ht035659-how-can-i-create-recovery-media-dvd-or-usb-or-order-recovery-media-dvd-or-usb-from-lenovo.  I personally would recommend this route.

If that option is not available or you want a clean install of Windows free from Lenovo software, you can download the ISO from Microsoft directly, then use their media creation tool to burn the ISO image into a bootable drive.  Here's some info on that: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10

Feel free to come back if you have any questions along the way and let us know how the upgrade goes!

Eric Xu
