Re: WiFi connectivity issue - ThinkPad Twist

2013-02-02, 9:15 AM

My configuration is:

router: Dlink 524

WLAN: Intel Centrino Wireless-N 2230

Other devices: asus eee 901 (windows XP), 2x samsung galaxy S2,

Twist is the only one with a connection problem, asus running 3 years without a single wifi drop, every single phone I had the same. I am sure it is not because of router

Re: WiFi connectivity issue - ThinkPad Twist

2013-02-02, 16:50 PM

It is interesting that is affecting users of this laptop which are using different cards and different drivers. Is there something at the OS or some Lenovo specific software added that could be causing this? I noticed in the notes for a recent update that the Lenovo Tablet Service "regulates power to the WIreless antennae". I installed the update but still have the issue.

I also want to provide some additional information which may be helpful. I'm finding that I'm only having issues when I'm connected to 2.4 GHz networks. The first thing that comes to mind is interference, since 2.4 GHz is so common. I've used InSSIDer to locate what channels other routers in my area and have only partial overlap on the channel I'm using. Yet still I'm having these problems when connected to 2.4 GHZ. What's interesting is only this laptop is having significant issues. Is it a matter of this laptop being EXTREMELY sensitive to interference?

I've been using a new simultaneous dual-band router and connected over 5 GHz and had no issues whatsoever for a few weeks now. Not a single issue over 5 GHz, despite even having lower signal strength since 5 GHz doesnn't penetrate walls as effectively as 2.4 GHz.  I've tried using the 2.4 GHz band of the new router and still having issues. So what is it about this specific device that has issues over 2.4 GHz?

Old Router: Netgear WNR3500L (latest firmware)
New Router: Linksys E4200v2 (latest firmware)
Wireless Card: 2x2 11a/b/g/n Wireless LAN PCI Express Half Mini Card Adapter (Broadcom 6.30.59.26)
Other devices periodically connected: Apple iPad 2, iPhone 5, iPhone 4, Dell Inspiron 1420 (Dell wireless card), Canon MP620 wireless MFP

None of my other devices are having the problem that the Lenovo Thinkpad Twist is having.

Thanks for the suggestion ciuvac, but like others, I have tried that - no significant difference.

I agree about over-sensitivity to wireless interference puboilermaker. I have dual-band router but only 2.4GHz on the Twist with Centrino 2230. I may try swapping in the Thinkpad agn card if I keep the latest (and last) replacement Twist so I can switch to 5GHz and see if that helps. The point is all my other devices work fine on both 2.4 GHz and 5GHz (where the relevant wifi card permits), including other older 2.4GHz only laptops located in the same place on my desk, running the same OS. The question is how to track down the cause? The cards clearly work well on some machines. That I guess leaves antennae or, more problematically, how the hardware and OS combined deal with wifi. Either way, Lenovo has responsibility to do something.

That's a great observation puboilermaker.

So does anyone else with a dual-band router set to GHz have any connection issues?

I have noticed that most people are using an Intel Centrino card when drops occur, does anyone else notice any other commonalities from our common issues?

I'm having the same problems (at home and also at work) with the same router: Dlink DIR-615.

I might have found a solution though, today, when I realized the issue might be the encryption algorithm, so I manually switched it from AES to TKIP. As soon as I did that, the WiFi disconnected and immediately connected back and everything started working again. Before, the internet connection used to slowly die out (although the WiFi signal was strong and still said it was connected) and I was getting time out when pinging the router.

I'm not sure everything is absolutely OK now, since I only switched to TKIP today, but it seems to have had an effect both at work and at home, so you guys might want to try it out.

Here's how to do it, if you don't already know:

1) Right click the WiFi icon in the systray, open Network and Sharing Center

2) Click on the WiFi connection, where it says Connections: WiFi (_your_wifi_name_)

3) Click on Wireless Properties and then Security tab

4) Change Encryption type from AES to TKIP

It's clear to me that there's an issue with the drivers (or the chipset) but in the mean time let everyone know that it works, by replying here.

Hi All,

In another forum post, the support specialist found that Windows 8 has conflicts with Cisco based routers.
