Windows 8.1 Update Issue with Lenovo Twist, (Brightness + SecureBoot non-enabled)

2013-10-18, 10:20 AM

I updated my i5, 4gb, Lenovo Twist yesterday evening to Windows 8.1 thru the Windows Store, and so far everything has gone smooth except for these two issues:

1)   The screen brightness at random notches down a few degrees, then back up to full brightness (where I want it)  in the middle of work and this is with the machine plugged in on  either High Performance/ Balanced/ Or Power saver. It gets kind of annoying.. I never had this problem before the update...

2)  On my desktop, in the right corner, I get the little warning embedded in the wallpaper.... I havent touched the Bios or anything!

" Windows 8.1       -- SecureBoot isn't configured correctly.       Build 9600"

Further notes:  I have done all the Lenovo System utility Updates before installing: latest BIOS, etc

Fixed my issue @ least. And it was a combination of two things that I previously tried when I first upgraded to 8.

1. the link above: turn off the "adaptive brightness" in display settings (however when I upgraded it was already off, so I turned it on, restarted, then back off). this may have fixed it, but I did #2 first, so it was one of the two.

2. Open the Intel Graphics panel > Advanced > Power > On Battery > Uncheck "Display Power Technology"

I have the same issue and I see others have it as well on different forums.  BUT, I have a laptop, one of the Edge models.  This seems to be an issue across many Lenovo products but no solution yet. I have tried to install the Power Management Driver but that does not fix it.  Anyone?

larbox,

Thanks for noting these issues - will see what we can find out.

I believe we had a formal / tip and fix for the autobrightness issue in Win 8 that recently came out - I'll go look for it.

Perhaps the 8.1 upgrade wiped that out some out.

As a "work around" we had this community article which may provide short term relief.

http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-Edge-Knowledge-Base/Random-changes-in-screen-brightness-every-few-minutes-while/ta-p/915291

Will have to check on the secure boot issue as well.  It is helpful that others are confirming it .

In the interrim, you might check out the solution on this thread - it sounds like they had the same issue and the solution was agreed by multiple people including someone else with a twist.

I am currently having this problem as well. I have windows 8.1 installed on my Twist i7-3517U and all my drivers are current. I tried unchecking power display technology, but my screen is still dimming for a few seconds and then brightening. I think the problem might not be as bad after adjusting unchecking power display technology, but the problem has definitely not gone away.

I also have the build error showing in the bottom right corner of my screen.
